A Month of Art Stars – Scott Wegener

Every day this month I’m going to feature a current comic book art “star,” someone whose work I absolutely love.

I’m mostly going to try to keep from the biggest names as much as possible, because, really, do I need to talk more about the awesomeness of JH Williams, Frank Quitely and Darwyn Cooke? Here‘s the archive of the artists mentioned so far!

Here’s an indie artist who drew one of the big comic book success stories of 2007.

Enjoy!

Scott Wegener is the co-creator (along with Brian Clevinger) and artist of the hit indie series, Atomic Robo.

Atomic Robo is a blast, and Wegener’s clean, fun style of artwork is a major attraction of the book.

Wegener has done other work, of course, which you can see on his website here.

That said, Atomic Robo is definitely his major artistic accomplishment, so here are a number of sample pages from Atomic Robo…

Pretty impressive, no?

The first Atomic Robo mini-series is collected under the name Atomic Robo Volume 1: Atomic Robo & the Fightin’ Scientists of Tesladyne.

The second mini-series is going on right now! Go find it! It is fun!
It reminds me of Michael Avon Oeming a bit, who I think is definitely an influence (I believe Oeming has done a cover for Atomic Robo).

Let me guess, Marvels going to grab him? *Groan*

That’s great. It’s amazing how expressive he makes a basically featureless face.

Holy crap, those pages are like my platonic ideal of the perfect comic book or something. Looks like I’m buying Atomic Robo, then.

He’s already done some inking work for Marvel.

Interestingly enough, on his blog, he recently said he was not as interested in doing paid-for-hire work (although he noted it paid him a whole lot more than indie work).

Wegener also drew an issue of Punisher: War Journal, and he was one of the announced winners/artistic finds of C.B. Cebulski’s ChesterQuest.

But, really, it’s all about Atomic Robo — an excellent book with excellent art and writing. Pick it up, people!

I think he is interested in it, but he’s just more interested in Atomic Robo… yeah:

“I had a really great time working on Punisher.
I too would love to be able to keep a foot in both camps.”

Yep, Atomic Robo is one of the prettiest (and funnest!) book out today. Buy it now!

Wegener = brutally brilliant on Atomic Robo. Brutally mis-cast on Punisher War Journal.
