I like the digests they are what got into read L&R. The larger trades and the hardcovers were too, I don't know threating for a new reader. I'm not finushed with vol.1 yet so the frutation of vol.2 not being collected hasn't affected me yet. Can't wait to read the annual.

To me, this was the Book of the Year. As a lifelong L&R fan, this was the one book I've been waiting for and it didn't disappoint me. I love that Jaime brought in some older characters from the former volumes and even the Hopey & Maggie Color Special. His story was fun and outlandish, which made for great reading.

Gilberto's selections were just pieces of Whimsy. I loved the Adventures of Duke and Sammy. If that was film made in the 50s by Sam & Dino, it would've rule 7 Ways to Sunday.

Was it a great read? Damn right it was!
Does it suck that we have to wait until next year for the next issue? Sure, but then again, people wait on pins and needles for certain films and books, why not this one.

Also in the meantime, we readers get The Troublemakers from Gilberto. And he's supposed to do more HCs about Fritzi's movies, which is an inspired idea.

I Injoyed the annual . it would have been better if we could have seen more Luba . on the plus side there was the epologue to Julios Day wich I thought could have been better with longer stories this format would have been perfect for the complete story of High Soft Lisp story line

I hope the next issue will have more realistic stories on the plus side this annual wasa lot better then the Hate Annual wich was a really short issue with only small story of Buddy Bradley

You are forgetting what they said when they announced the new format:

Nobody was buying the individual issues any more. (At least not enough for them to be viable.)

Everyone was waiting for the trades.

This IS the future of comics.

Get used to it.

I discovered L&R recently in those digest formats and wanted to wait until the rest of the series came out that way, but since it didn't look like they would anytime soon, I went ahead and bought volumes 15-24 of the trades, with the exception of volume 18 (the Locas In Love you have pictured above.) Why? BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF PRINT! At least according to all the online retailers I have checked. How dopey is that to have a key volume in the book's run be hard to find? I had to settle with the individual issues collected in that trade. Also, the last issue of Love And Rockets Volume 2, #20, still isn't in a trade of any kind, so I had to buy it seperately. *Sigh* I LOVE this book, but the switching between formats and availabilities is a bit annoying... The new volume was okayyyy, but I wasn't blown away by it like I was Death Of Speedy or Heraclio's love letter to his wife or the recent Luba stories. Ending on a cliffhanger too was a bit much for an annual release...

Actually you need only have to wait until the San Diego Comic Con. This was available at the Fantagraphics Booth, the last week of July, but comic shops had to wait until September 10th to receive copies. I'm sure Fantagraphics will have the second issue available at San Diego Comic Con 2009. I myself loved it. sure it will be difficult waiting nearly a year, but quality over quanity is sometimes for the best.
