Very Cool Angel Medina Secret War Piece

In the latest issue of Venom: Dark Origin, Angel Medina depicts the moment that the symbiote and Eddie Brock merge, and in that moment, Eddie sees the first Secret War through the symbiote's "eyes," and the result is an absolutely sweet two-page spread by Angel Medina of Secret War.

Check it out.

I know Secret Wars gets a bad rap nowadays for being somewhat gimmicky, but I loved it. And this? This is ridiculously awesome.

Aside from Hawkeye nocking his arrow on the wrong side of the bow, that is pretty sweet.

I'm going to be an uber-nerd here (as Secret Wars was the first big crossover I read and still a personal favorite for the utter absurdity here of it all), but if it's from the Symbiote's perspective, why is it showing the battle before Spidey got his costume? It wasn't in that place and if it's a later battle, why is it seeing Spidey in the red and blues?

Nerding aside, that's a nice image.

How do you figure Hawkeye has the arrow nocked wrong? With the bow horizontal, the arrow HAS to be on top. On bottom, he wouldn't be able to hold it and aim properly. Were the bow verticle, I'd agree with you, but not with it horizontal.

Patrick: The symbiote would have been around throughout the war, watching.

I love that Lockheed gets a prominent role in the picture.

Patrick, if I remember correctly, the symbiote was inside a containment unit in one of the compounds (Spidey later mistook it for a clothing generator). But maybe the containment unit had a little window of sorts.

It's obviously got a ringside seat, with popcorn, for a big-ass battle.

Didn't some of the other heroes get new costumes from the same gizmo Spidey got Venom from? If so, where are the REST of the symboites?

And I thought only Jedidiah Springfield was licensed to "embiggen."

Pete went to the wrong machine to get his suit.

Yeah, actually, Hawkeye's arrow rest is on the correct side.

Cool. I remembered some other folks coming out od the room with new gear, then SM went in and got Venom, but that's where it all went gray.

On a related note - how much sense does it make to have a prision machine right next to a clothing replicator. Even for aliens with a different thought process, that's pretty dorked-up.

Why would the symbiote be able to transfer memories to Brock, but not be able to extract them from Peter?

Same reason we can all make our comments, but can't force anyone else to leave theirs.

That Galactus is AWESOME!

Just wanted to share that point...

That's a really gorgeous image, no doubt.

I have a real soft spot for Secret Wars, primarily because of the lovely ZMike Zeck art.

There's a great interview in the recent UK tpb (NOT the US one, oddly) with Jim Shooter, who goes into great detail on how the whole thing came together - including how Marvel bought the Black Costume idea for Spidey froma a fan!

Anyone else remember the toy line that spun out from this?

I remember that toy line. I've kept my black costume Spidey from it pristine over the years (paint rubs off too easy) as it's the coolest black costume figure I've ever seen. Really wish I'd got Iceman & Hobby though.

Man, I love secret wars.

You say that like you need to be informed fantasy is made at someone's discretion.

Your question seemed to imply an if/then statement: "IF the symbiote can impart memories, THEN it should be able to extract them."

I was simply pointing out that many (if not, in fact, most) modes of communication are strictly one way. You can offer information to someone, but it is up to them whether or not to offer any back. There's no reason the symbiote shouldn't be able to do extract memories if the writers want it to be able to, but there's no logical inconsistancy with it NOT being able to either.

In a fictional reality that tolerates characters that read and project thoughts (eg: Charles Xavier, introduced in X-Men #1, 1963), on what basis does any reader question or deny that that any given creature that can project thoughts should also be able to read them as well?

What is the hardship, that you can't give the creators the slack to introduce such a character casually when the reality already tolerates characters like it?

Aliens introduced in FF#2? No problem!

Mutants that can read and project thoughts? Is it Wednesday again?

Aliens that can project thoughts? Hey, hey, I've only got 2 hands to carry comics to the check-out line.

Thought projecting aliens that can also read them? How f***ing stupid do you think I am?

That was a great looking spread. Man, I loved Secret Wars. Makes me wish that I hadn't sold off my TPB some time ago. I think I'll have to add it back to my collection.
