That was a great looking spread. Man, I loved Secret Wars. Makes me wish that I hadn't sold off my TPB some time ago. I think I'll have to add it back to my collection.

In a fictional reality that tolerates characters that read and project thoughts (eg: Charles Xavier, introduced in X-Men #1, 1963), on what basis does any reader question or deny that that any given creature that can project thoughts should also be able to read them as well? What is the hardship, that you can't give the creators the slack to introduce such a character casually when the reality already tolerates characters like it? Aliens introduced in FF#2? No problem! Mutants that can read and project thoughts? Is it Wednesday again? Aliens that can project thoughts? Hey, hey, I've only got 2 hands to carry comics to the check-out line. Thought projecting aliens that can also read them? How f***ing stupid do you think I am?

Your question seemed to imply an if/then statement: "IF the symbiote can impart memories, THEN it should be able to extract them." I was simply pointing out that many (if not, in fact, most) modes of communication are strictly one way. You can offer information to someone, but it is up to them whether or not to offer any back. There's no reason the symbiote shouldn't be able to do extract memories if the writers want it to be able to, but there's no logical inconsistancy with it NOT being able to either.

I remember that toy line. I've kept my black costume Spidey from it pristine over the years (paint rubs off too easy) as it's the coolest black costume figure I've ever seen. Really wish I'd got Iceman & Hobby though.

That's a really gorgeous image, no doubt.

I have a real soft spot for Secret Wars, primarily because of the lovely ZMike Zeck art.

There's a great interview in the recent UK tpb (NOT the US one, oddly) with Jim Shooter, who goes into great detail on how the whole thing came together - including how Marvel bought the Black Costume idea for Spidey froma a fan!

Anyone else remember the toy line that spun out from this?

Iâ€™m going to be an uber-nerd here (as Secret Wars was the first big crossover I read and still a personal favorite for the utter absurdity here of it all), but if itâ€™s from the Symbioteâ€™s perspective, why is it showing the battle before Spidey got his costume? It wasnâ€™t in that place and if itâ€™s a later battle, why is it seeing Spidey in the red and blues?

On a related note - how much sense does it make to have a prision machine right next to a clothing replicator. Even for aliens with a different thought process, that's pretty dorked-up.

Patrick, if I remember correctly, the symbiote was inside a containment unit in one of the compounds (Spidey later mistook it for a clothing generator). But maybe the containment unit had a little window of sorts.

It's obviously got a ringside seat, with popcorn, for a big-ass battle.

How do you figure Hawkeye has the arrow nocked wrong? With the bow horizontal, the arrow HAS to be on top. On bottom, he wouldn't be able to hold it and aim properly. Were the bow verticle, I'd agree with you, but not with it horizontal.
