Don Cheadle to Play Jim Rhodes in Iron Man 2
Wow, that is a bit of a surprise, isn't it?
I always just assumed that Howard's contract had some sort of clause to be in Iron Man 2 in a bigger role, but apparently, the role was just saved for him, they still had to come to an agreement on price, and they couldn't, so Don Cheadle is taking over for Iron Man 2, which presumably will include Jim Rhodes donning armor, as well.
I like Cheadle as an actor better than Howard, so I guess this is good news, although Howard is a bulkier guy - I guess Cheadle will have to work out a lot.

I think he looks more like Jim Rhodes anyhow.

Definitely a great choice.
Does anyone remember the other hotel Don Cheadle worked at?
Remember Golden Palace, the Golden Girls spin-off?

Do people wearing powered armor really need to be especially bulked-up?

I hope he brings his highly convincing Cockney accent.

And now that "next time, baby" line is a completely different kind of funny.

Not really, but Howard looked like someone who could believably be a military man. Cheadle is a bit scrawnier then I'd expect (even if he is Air Force).
Not that it will prevent me from enjoying Cheadle in the role, but I can see it throwing the audience off a bit that not only is it a different actor but one that other then skin color (and not even then really) the two actors have almost nothing in common, not face, nor voice nor size nor shape of their body.

Eh. Billy Dee Williams was Harvey Dent in the two Burton Batman movies. Then Tommy Lee Jones was Two-Face. Most people didn't blink.

I'm suirprised you didn't mention the more prominent switcheroo example from those 3 movies of replacing Michael Keaton with Val Kilmer.

I don't really think bulkiness is all that necessary to be a military man.

I like both guys - Crash and Hustle and Flow were great flicks, and Don Cheadle's been great all over.
I think that Howard is shaped more like Jim Rhodes though.
Probably won't matter, but I hope all parties have parted under decent terms.

They're both Academy Award Nominees:)
I'd rather the continuation of actors between movies...but Don Cheadle is one of my favorite actors ever so, I'm good either way:)

Hadn't Rhodes been in Special Forces? They just tend to be big.

I think he was a Marine, though when I was in there were plenty of smaller, scrappy guys around

Perhaps they could have saved even more money and had Robert Downie Jr. play Rhodes too.

Agreed! If you want to see the actor best-suited to play Jim Rhodes, see Tropic Thunder!

Bwah. Very nice.
I wants me some FFFoom next time. They'll have the budget to justify it.

Cheadle wasn't in the military, as far as I know.
And I have always heard that Special Forces troops tend to be smaller than average because of the emphasis on speed, stealth and stamina. (I read a lot of military fiction and non-fiction.)

Great news. It's not like Howard is a bad actor or anything, but I think he was the weak link in the first film. Cheadle will rock.

I allways liked Don Cheadle since his various Soderbergh films but found that Howard was a more natural fit for Rodhes.
I like the choices made by Marvel when it comes to the casting for their films, add the Brannagh involvement for Thor...
I wait for the Captain America choice certainly the more difficult one.

Crash was one of the worst movies to have come out in my lifetime, and it's made even worse by the fact that it won an award. That movie is so pretentious and dumb. It wants so desperately to be meaningful, but it reads like a high school creative writing assignment.
"It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something."
I'm glad to have more Cheadle and less Howard, whatever the movie.

Apodaca - Yeah, I liked Crash a lot better the first time when it was "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q.

HA!
Thanks for the laugh, Anthony Strand! And it's so true-- Avenue Q really does point out how pretentious and condescending stuff like CRASH is.
