Back when I first started corresponding with Blaine Saunders, I lamented the fact that nobody had put together a coffee table book of Norman Saunders artwork. If you followed the link to the official Norman Saunders website, you'll note that Norman's son David took up the cause and produced what looks to be a fabulous book published by Illustrated Press. It has rocketed to the very top of my To Buy list.

They reissued all three series of the Saunders Batman cards back in 1989, I assume to capitalize on the popularity of the movie. My brother was the Batman freak back then, and bought the cards. Since I'm now the Batman freak, I currently have the cards. They're great, and even tell a story. Good stuff.

You have to love the Batman trading card red series (shown above), the original black series (#1) and the follow-up blue series. I collected all these cards at the time. Series #4 were live-action shots from the Batman movie and couldn't hold a candle to the wonderfully painted cards. The reverse side of the black series contained an excellent original Batman adventure serial, featuring Joker, Riddler, Catwoman and Penguin.

One thing that was sort of funny. Some of the cards in the black series were miscolored and Batman's costume was pink instead of blue. When I was a kid, I "justified" this by suggesting to myself this happened during the "Rainbow Batman" adventure in the comics. The Rainbow Batman was a story in which Batman wore different colored costumes on each adventure to take the camera's away from focusing on Robin, who had an injured arm at the time. As Dick Grayson was also going to school at the time with the same injured arm, the thought was his schoolmates could put two-and-two together and guess his identity. Some of The Rainbow Batman's costumes were absurd. A totally white costume, with a black target on the front and a single costume comprised of every color in the rainbow were among the craziest. Could you imagine today's dark and gritty Batman wearing a rainbow suit?
