Good for you Greg to review all three of these comics. I am a huge fan of Dwight's work. I own all three of these comics, and I read them over and over again. I just love his style of writing. The Poo books are going to be classics-I am not saying that because I am biased, they are wonderful and the work that was put into it, especially the gorgeous artwork will continue to gain new fans. M-Theory and Interagents rock! Hollywood should really sit up and take notice of Dwight soon as his work is perfect for the screen.

Zombies are more played out, for now. Of course, that will all change when we get the inevitable Marvel Pirates. ("Aveng-arrrrrghs Assemble!")

Being a fan (and friend) of Dwight's, I can't be wholly objective when talking about his books. I simply love 'em all. However, being the father of a 5 year old son and 9 year old daughter, i can attest to the fact that "Kid Houdini" does, in fact, work perfectly for the younger kids. Both of my kids adore it!

And I couldn't disagree with Apodaca more... pirates more played out than zombies? Dude, I WRITE a zombie book ("Jesus Hates Zombies" - check it out -- end shameless plug) and even I would say that zombies are WAY more played out than pirates!

Good reviews of three books I've recently read, Greg. Dwight MacPherson's not only a great up-and-coming comic writer, he's also personable, friendly and accessible, and a MASTER at internet BBS marketing. I ran into Dwight on several internet boards over the last few years. His direct approach worked, got me to buy his first "Edgar Allen Poo" book... but it was his writing that got me to come back for more.

I agree with your assessment of "Poo 2" - I thought it was a stronger, better written novel than Book One, and Avery Butterworth's art works well with the slightly bleaker, darker tone of book two. Butterworth's more impressionistic style carries more terror, even in light of what you cite as a slightly less "surreal" quality. It's still pretty darn surreal!

I just finished reading "Dead Men"... as student of early Christianity myself, and as someone who also gobbles up books on the Knights Templar and all that stuff, I had to pick it up. The only Pirate Comic I'd ever read before this was Watchmen's "Black Freighter" (btw... how are pirate comics "played out"? I can't name another contemporary title...). I found the shifting time frames and the forward and back flashing to be a little hard to follow and occasionally tiresome, but the ideas are strong and the writing shows promise, even if the dialogue sometimes bogs down in pseudo "piratese". Dwight has said this is his first book, and I think sometimes that shows, though not in any way that made me regret my purchase.

Finally, Kid Houdini... gotta agree with you there, too, Greg, it came off a little too "young" for me as well, but was still entertaining, and even without reading the blurb it struck me like a good old-fashioned Scooby Doo adventure... you almost expect the villain to say, "...and I would've gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling KIDS!" Fortunately, Dwight didn't QUITE go there. I'm thinking of giving the book to my niece or my nephew, as it certainly is quality kid's entertainment... for while it feels "young" it doesn't feel deliberately juvenile or like it's talking down to kids.

MacPherson has some great ideas and good execution. That's why I'm picking up his latest, "M-Theory" and reading "Interagents" online, too. Thanks for shining some light on a worthy subject, Greg!

At this point., Dan, I think everyone just assumes that you are the caveat to any "Who doesn't like this" rhetorical question. You have carved that niche out for yourself.

"Come on, it’s a pirate comic! Who doesn’t love pirate comics?"

That would be me. They're even more played out than zombie comics.
