Conservatives have ruled the country on all levels for the best part of a decade while Liberals have run in circles. We’re angry at what Bush and co. have done to America. Colbert is popular because it appeals to how angry we Liberals are, by mocking Conservatives. If Obama wins, expect Colbert to gradually lose most of his appeal.

Lawrence, I think Hannity and O’Reilly are one-note jokes too. And are horribly overrated. But Colbert is just jumping on their coattails and being a one-note parody of a shtick that’s practically a one-note parody of itself to begin with. Those guys are so over the top that they’ve basically become a parody of themselves. So a guy whose whole career is dedicated to sarcastically mocking them does not impress me as much as it seems his easily amused fan.

It’s the comedic equivalent of a guy publishing a comic series solely dedicated to mocking All-Star Batman or something. Just too easy a target.

If Obama has comic knowledge then why didnâ€™t he acknowledge that his only true competitor for President was recently in Spiderman? That being, Steve Colbert.

The only thing Colbert’s in the running for is the most overrated comedian in history award. How a guy spun one joke, barely good enough for a recurring SNL sketch, into a career is truly impressive.

I doubt very much that either Obama or McCain are comic book fans. Superman, Alfred E. Neuman and Mr. Spock are all well-known pop-culture icons from a better time in American entertainment history. If you asked these politicians if they had read the latest installment of “Civil War”, I’m sure they would have no idea you were referring to a (very bad) Marvel comic, but would, rather, think you were talking about something related to the real U.S. Civil War. And if Obama or any other politician had nothing better to do with his time than to read the kind of crap that Marvel and DC have been publishing for the last twenty-five-plus years, I for one wouldn’t even consider voting for him. It’s a pretty safe bet, too, that the Superman Obama was referencing in his speech wasn’t any of the lousy modern-day versions, but was probably (like Jerry Seinfeld’s preference also) something more akin to the classic Curt Swan version.

Sorry, there’s no way McCain was better. His lines were decent and I thought the end where he built Obama up really highly was genuinely funny, but Obama was hilarious AND from the heart about a lot of stuff that’s being said, not just pandering to supporters like McCain’s cracks about MSNBC and Acorn. I especially liked his comments about his name (“Swahili for ‘that one’”, “Barack Steve Obama”) and Fox News’ revelation that he fathered two African American children in wedlock. Hilarious, true and slightly poignant. The entire “who is Barack Obama?” riff was just classic (“it’s right there on my Facebook page”), made even better for the great Superman joke. It also seemed like he wrote his own lines a little more than McCain.

I’m not sure if McCain’s jokes were actually funnier or if his delivery was just better. However I enjoyed both speeches very much and it’s good to see that candidates can take a joke (or at least pretend to).

I’m going to vote for Obama, but that said, McCain was funnier at that dinner. John McCain actually has a really sharp sense of humor; if they’d let him show his real personality during this campaign, he’d be doing a lot better, I think.

I personally think McCain works better as the Parasite, trying to get close to Obama so he can drain his precious energy. He’s too off the cuff to really work as Luthor.
