You've hit on my issue with Final Crisis. It is very stylistic, but I can't understand 90% of the comic without reading all the crossovers and one-shots. I'm not going to lay out $50 each month to understand one comic.

I picked up Lea Hernandez's Cathedral Child & Clockwork Angel (I might be misremembering the titles) because they had pull-quotes from both Warren Ellis and Kurt Busiek. At the time, I'd read anything by those two. Steampunk romance sort-of-manga would never have found its way home with me otherwise.

(The comics were good, by the way)

Stroman's leaving X-Factor. Count me among the "thank the gods" group, as I was ready to drop the book after sitting through interminably countless crossovers (that yes, ironically likely saved the book's sales from dropping too low), and tons of art shifts, but I'll give it a few more issues to see where it's headed.

I'll take " Next issue" bits that say nothing over ones that give away things that are presumably supposed to be surprises (note to anyone in any way involved with advertising any form of narrative entertainment: if it happens in the last 25% of the story, don't reveal it in the ads). Obviously another page of story would be better, but if you've got an extra page to fill, it's got to be easier to have the artist throw a pretty picture together than get the writer to slap an epilogue on AND get the artist to draw it.

What really bothers me - and am I the only one who's noticed these? - is when the "previously" page gives something away. How hard is it to not put something that hasn't happened yet in the "previously" blurb? If you don't know what I'm talking about ... well, you probably just happen to get books where they're smart enough not to do this, or maybe you don't read the "previously" stuff because, you know, you got the previous issue. But every now and then - more often that you'd think - you'll get, say, an issue that ends with Batman and Robin beating a villain, and Robin says "What was that about?" and Batman says "I don't know ... but I know who will!" Then the next issue, the "Previously" text will end with "After the fight, the pair decided to pay a visit to Dr. Chang, an old friend of Bruce Wayne's for some information ... only to find Chang dead!" Then the issue will start with the Batmobile rolling down the street with Robin asking where they're going and Batman explaining who Dr. Chang is and why he might know why the villain attacked, and on page 2 they arrive to find Chang's door broken ajar, and you, the reader, are rolling your eyes and thinking "gee, whatever could have happened?"

At least one other person has noticed that kind of thing, right?

I know in my case the essays in Criminal have prompted many movies to be added to my Netflix cue and many books to be added to my Amazon wishlist (which I imagine was part of the point), so I guess "endorsements" do work in the right context and on fools like myself.

Great to see footnotes back. I'd like to see them, if not reinstated line-wide, then left up to the discretion of individual editors, rather than being against the rules of discouraged. The same with thought ballons; it was an interesting idea for writers to try doing without them, and if anyone wants to leave them out in their work, then fine, but it shouldn't be a matter of editorial policy.

Also, I'm as sick of pinup covers as the next guy, but what I'm really tired of is Marvel's no-content "next issue" splash pages. "Next Issue... Iron Man will appear in his own comic!" "Next Issue... The Hulk Will Stand There Looking Menacing!" If it doesn't tell us anything about what happens in the next issue (even an unexplained shot of a villain or guest star would be a better excuse for a "next issue" spot), then it's just a waste-of-space pinup page and they shouldn't even bother. Give us an extra page of story if you're going to give us such a crap excuse for a "next issue" page.

I know that's your point, Greg. I was agreeing with your point and expanding on it. I don't ALWAYS disagree with you, you know! :D

Just wanted to say ditto on the love for SCALPED... I also buy the single issues AND the trades to do my little part in supporting this title. There are few titles I personally deem awesome enough to willingly make the double spend on, but this is certainly one of them. It's fun to upgrade to the trade and then pass the single issue arcs out to friends and coworkers trying to hook them. I know I'm responsible for at least one new reader that I got hooked by doing this, who now picks it up monthly...

That's my point, T. There's nothing terribly thrilling about Final Crisis. I like it more than you do, I think, but it doesn't have the subtext of his more interesting work nor the sheer ballsiness of something like Rock of Ages, which was convoluted but stunning in its way.

Regarding Stroman: Oh well, never mind!

Here, he’s just showing what happens when evil wins.

Problem is, he did that SO much better already in Rock of Ages. Better action, more coherent, more focused, better character moments. Rock of Ages is my favorite JLA story ever from any era. A group of old school villains mobilizing to stop the heroes. A plan unfolding with Darkseid and evil ultimately winning. All the same elements from Rock of Ages here again. But to see it retold, but Didio-ized to be less coherent, longer, poorly schedules and poorly focused is tragic.

Man, I hear you on the footnotes. I remember back in the day when pages were just covered in them... and I loved it.

You hit the nail on the head with it making you feel more "connected" to the Marvel Universe.

Bring em' back I say.

"It wasn’t a pull quote, but seeing Garth Ennis wrote the introduction pushed me over the top and convinced me to get the first Transmetropolitan TPB when it first came out."

It was the pull quote by Garth Ennis on one of the SCALPED tpbs that convinced me to pick it up and give it a try.
I get the monthly and the tpbs.

Oh, that's right -- I'd forgotten that I neglected to mention David Janssen by name in my first draft of the piece, and the reason I sent over the revised copy was to correct that.

But no worries, Ed. I had a blast writing it, and Sean's painting of Harry O looks awesome.

And I'd argue that if you're going to only buy Criminal once, you should buy the monthlies, since the bonus essays only appear in the monthlies.
