Personally, I've often found Feldstein written stories to be far too wordy. There are some really great stories in earlier issues, but also some real clunkers. They are often good eamples of everything that's bad with EC stories (yes, they have their faults). For my money, I like these Wessler stories, as he allows the artist to tell the story rather than a 100 word balloon. There is a lot of great EC stuff, but this one is the most consistent that I've found. Having Krigstein story is more than enough for it to make the short list of favourites, and the black humour of Davis' final panel seals the deal.

I was wrong about Tales from the Crypt 45 being the last issue of TFTC. TFTC 46 is the one that was supposed to be Crypt of Terror. On a confusing side note, the first 3 issues of TFTC (17-19) were also titled "Crypt of Terror." The reprints of these usually change the title to TFTC, though. For what it's worth, I personally don't think Crypt 45 is a good example of an EC horror comic. The heyday was certainly around issue 32 or so. The earlier issues were scripted by the underrated Al Feldstein and are much more indicative of the EC style.

I own #s 3-5 on the list (not sure offhand if I have CREEPY #6 as well -- don't think so, though I do have several of the single-digit-numbered ishes, including #1 -- or if that TALES FROM THE CRYPT is in one of the many Gemstone EC annuals I've got), but HAUNTED #20 is the only one I actually bought off the spinner racks as a kid. Great choice!

The second Creepy Archives is coming out at the end of the year, and contains #'s 6-10 I hear. So this issue will be reprinted soon.

Actually, that ish of TFTC is TFTC in name only. It was actually going to be the NEW horror title from EC and it was to be called "Crypt of Terror." Alas, the Comics Code ruined the plans for this comic. The publishers scrapped the idea for Crypt of Terror, changed the cover, and presented the contents as the last isue of TFTC.
