After taking a quick peek through it, most of the things that bothered me about it were art-related. As mentioned before, the photorealism can at times be awkward, and Billy often does better when he just draws instead of mimics. I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but Little Sure Shot looked just as Caucasian as the rest of Easy, which really bugged me. He's a favorite of mine and to see him kind of...generalized...like that sucks. He still wears the feathers, which makes it all the more strange.

Writing wise, I've heard that the narration gets in the way, but again I didn't bring this home with me. I met Billy in Ohio back in October and he was fun to talk to. He talked a lot about his fondness for Mauldin, which I reall dug. I'll definitely keep watching the rest of the series.

>>Are you using the logic that every single guy who writes a war comic is a far-right republican?

Not at all. I don't know that Tucci is, either, but my impression from the column he used to occasionally do for Newsarama is that he definitely leans that way. Too, his icon there is, I know, a Che Guevara image with a "no" slash through it. Which hardly makes him the second coming of Rush Limbaugh, of course, but at the same time it's probably an indication that he doesn't have much use for, say, causes I happen to be symphathetic toward.

I think the colouring looks a bit too shiny for my tastes, but I'd still pick it up if the series gets good reviews by the end.

From my one or two encounters with him and the stuff I've read on the net, Tucci comes off as an incredibly nice, earnest guy. I don't always agree with him, but I'll fully believe that he put his all into making this respectful and reverent. It's interesting, of course, that that's not always the best way to make the most engaging comic possible.

Oh, and I think he was expecting to do more with H4H but that's just from what I remember.

I would love to see Garth Ennis write a Sgt. Rock monthly.

I miss the days when DC published half-a-dozen war comics every month.

And given my impression of Tucci's politics, I'm hoping he's already done all the issues, since yesterday's election results may have plunged him into crippling depression.

Ummm ... Every calendar I'm aware of has Veteran's Day as 11/11, next Tuesday. What am I missing?

Great review, Brian.

I'll be sure to pick this up when it hits my LCS tomorrow here in the UK.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to Tucci's use of photo-reference - As much as I like his stuff, he really does use it too many times and not to particularly good effect.

The irony is, when he simply just draws his faces, they almost always look better.

BTW, and slightly off topic, was he only ever due to draw the first two issues of the recent Heroes For Hire revamp, or did he quit?
