I thought the abortion arc would have been the first one back, since the last issue before the hiatus ended with an abortion clinic getting bombed. Then it was the immigration storyline when things got back, which was a bit of a weird shift.

And why am I always surprised when JSA does top-20 numbers?

I don’t agree that there’s nothing wrong with studio execs being too afraid to tackle hot-topic issues. Which is to say I do realise that they’re in the business of making money, I’m not suggesting that people boycott anything, but merely because it is understandable doesn’t making it right. But even on a economic front, as many pro-lifers as they may piss off, the could be as many pro-choicers that would be encouraged to watch. The studio execs have made a choice, and it isn’t a purely economic choice either, and they may be critised for that choice. I don’t think anything going to change, but that shouldn’t stop us from critising what we see as wrong. Also, we can’t forget that they mightn’t be responding to public opinion as much as determining public opinion, and that seems a greater problem.

Â» What I bought – 12 November 2008 Wheaton and Fialkov do a fine job taking this horrible job (well, I guess it pays well, and I suppose the people who do it enjoy it, but it still seems horrible), making it mundane, and then building a sense of horror back into it. Bellarmine and his team of co-workers make the jobs as scientific as possible, and the writers throw a lot of technical information at us that distances us from the fact that theyâ€™re cleaning up splattered blood. Then they introduce the mystery, and itâ€™s rather terrifying. As a single issue, itâ€™s well-constructed, giving us nice character sketches and a lot of information without being too overwhelming. Ekedalâ€™s art, while not spectacular, is solid, especially when he has to convey the banality of suburbia juxtaposed against the presence of a lot of blood staining that banality. I like Elvis Costello, but I could never get into Joe Jackson. Maybe it’s because I was born in 1981, but “Steppin’ Out” always sounds like an 80s TV show theme song or a Mentos commercial to me.

I wasn’t sure where Lapham was going with issue #4, Brian, but I wasn’t expecting that!

Am I a moron? Why? Be specific, as there are so many reasons I could be!

The Dracula analogue occurred to me, too, but he was talking about being trapped and finding his objects of power, so I wonder if there’s a little of the Sandman in there.

Dan (and others): Yeah, it’s not Joy Division. And just because I don’t like Joy Division (yes, it’s me – sorry!) doesn’t mean I can’t use them! They’re totally random lyrics! And isn’t anyone going to actually list the song????

Then again, having completely failed to recognize the lyrics from “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” a few weeks ago, I no longer have any confidence whatsoever in my ability in that area, so far all I know these ARE from Decades (great song, btw, though of course A Means to an End is still the best one on the LP).

Except that I just resorted to a Google search & discovered that the actual song in question is … ummm … to put it extremely mildly, not a particular favorite of mine. Oh, well — to each his own, of course.

Also, I KILL GIANTS=best comic going right now.

Nope. One of the CSBG regulars — can’t remember whether it’s Brian or one of the legion of Gregs — is on record as not liking Joy Division. That’s unfortunate, of course, but I’ve dealt with it & I’ve moved past it. I think.

Fables 75 sold so many issues because it’s an “anniversary issue,” which always gets an obligatory bump.

And Manhunter’s down to 12,000 copies per issue? Holy crap, I can’t believe it’s lasted this long.

“So this becomes just another experiment by DC and Marvel to see if people will pay 4 dollars for a regular-sized comic book before they inevitably raise the price of all their books to $3.99 (again, why not $3.25 or $3.50 – do we really need a whole dollar leap?). Theyâ€™ve only been doing this on â€œspecialâ€ events, but youâ€™ll notice that the â€œspecialsâ€ used to mean 32 pages of story, then 22-page stories with hard-to-find reprints, and now 22-page stories with almost completely superfluous â€œbonus material.â€ Oh, theyâ€™re tricky, those bigwigs at DC and Marvel!”

Sorry, but DC is not the one that does this every month. Almost all of DC’s more expensive comics have extra pages of new story. Marvel is the one that often charges $3.99 for 22 pages of story plus information you can find at Wikipedia, and recently Marvel has had $3.99 comics with 16 pages of new story.
