Quimby the Mouse touches on similar subjects, but it has a little more levity. It is very good and goes down a little smoother. ACN #18, focusing on a girl’s emotional difficulties in getting through daily life (she happens to be an amputee), was not any easier. I would put the new volume in the ‘try before you buy’ category.

However, the better it makes me empathize with the charactersâ€™ misery, the more I donâ€™t want to read it! I think if it were more palatable, it would be a lesser work. Itâ€™s truly unique in my experience as a reader.

I agree with all of that, but is the other ACN stuff that miserable

Ware’s work on Jimmy Corrigan has one particularly interesting quality to it; I feel the work succeeds more the less I enjoy it. It seeks to evoke a relentless downcast tone and focuses on life’s struggles and disappointments. Jimmy Corrigan wonderfully depicts malaise and draws out doubt and discomfit in the reader. However, the better it makes me empathize with the characters’ misery, the more I don’t want to read it! I think if it were more palatable, it would be a lesser work. It’s truly unique in my experience as a reader.

Jimmy Corrigan was the most depressing comic Iâ€™ve ever read, and it gave me eyestrain. Do I want to read more Ware?

Yeah I’m feeling kind of the same. Is Acme Novelty Library just a relentless barrage of misery or does it liven up at times?

It’s the only comic being published today that completely deserves, nay, demands being bought in “issue” form and in its collected editions. Am I the only one that wants to give Chris Ware a hug though? Tell him that it’s all okay?

But would it be quite as good? I can see Ware actually needing that much time to make something so perfectly crafted.
