Dan: These days, I try to wait for the trade on almost everything DC and Marvel publish. I know it's coming out like that, and it's often cheaper just to wait. I love looking at Connor's art in that Terra mini, so I may have to pick it up when it's collected in softcover in two years.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought of I Hate Gallant Girl. Brunette = ugly in many circles of society.

Looks like your impression of CHARLATAN BALL after 5 issues remains identical to the conclusions I reached after the first 1 (at which point I dropped it). Too bad.

As for other comics this week, I dunno if you're just not buying DC's TERRA mini or if you're waiting for it to be collected in trade ... or if, deep down, you just hate entertaining comics drawn by the wonderful Amanda Conner, in which case I fear for your soul.

I'm subbing to I HATE GALLANT GIRL via mail order & so won't see #2 till next week (assuming the USPS cooperates), but finally received #1 on Thursday & liked it. Now I need to go trawling for your review of that one, though if memory serves you expressed reservations (that I agree with) about the main character's being drawn just as attractively as Gallant Girl, with her only "drawback" being that she was brunette rather than blonde.

If we've got to lose NOBLE CAUSES, as Jay F has decreed, at least it seems to be going out on a very strong note.

jiv: I started calling Morrison that a few years ago. I like Morrison a lot, but it's somewhat tongue in cheek, as I don't think everything he writes warrants the praise heaped upon him. So it's all me. I just think it's fun to use. That's all.

A little doubt. Since when people have been calling Morrison god of all comics? No, I'm no hater, I'm just curious, that's all.

My point was that it's goofy to call Valkyrie that because she has a name. The other Asgardians just go by their names, so why does she have a code name and why is that code name her job? Nobody calls Ben Urich "Reporter." They call him by his name. So why not just call her Brunhilde?

My brain was hurting when I thought Last Rites took place before RIP, and now that I've learned that RIP takes place first it's hurting even more. But perhaps next issue will resolve things. And 682 was wonderful.

Everyone keeps talking about Morrison leaving Batman, can someone point me in the direction of that bit of news / speculation? Last I read he and Didio said he was staying past RIP and Final Crisis...

Criminal is mmm-mmm good. Can't wait for Incognito, and then for Criminal's return. And, also, Angel of Death. The "Bad Night" arc came together so well, I feel a little bad for having agreed with Greg about its seeming to adhere too closely to noir convention after part 2. I should probably read it in complete stories, but I can't wait if I have the singles sitting around and I can't get the trades because I needs the back matter. Dilemmas, dilemmas...

I'm still on board with Iron Fist. Like Chris above, it's not "The book I look forward to the most" like it was during the first half of the Seven Capitol Cities of Heaven. But it feels like a logical continuation of the story and characters from than whatstherenames, the previous writers. I do miss Aja, but Foreman doesn't bug me as he seems to others and, hey, Russ Heath's kung fu cowboys!

I'm sure absolutely no one cares, but it's interesting that the name Brunhild (in its various spellings) was co-opted for Norse myth, as the historical Brunhild was a Visigothic princess who married into the Merovingian royal family in the late 6th century and dominated the political scene for the next 50 years. Someone writing myths must have liked the name, because she's now much more famous as a Germanic/Norse figure.

I think it's weirder that a valkyrie is known only as "Valkyrie." Isn't that like Thor being known only as "Asgardian" or all the X-Men calling themselves "Mutant?" Sure, Valkyrie is a lot more bad-ass than, say, Brunhilda or Grete, but they could have given the poor girl some kind of name.

I've lost a bit of interest in Iron Fist since Mad Brubaction jumped ship as well. It's still nowhere near the "Drop-zone," but it's no longer one of the comics I leave till last when I get my monthly pile, safe in the knowledge that I'm getting some crazy-entertaining-action! Pity.

Looking forward to Ed on Incognito. Just worried that we may never see Criminal's third edition launched....

"IGN Comics: Can you verify what the link is between the timelines of RIP and Final Crisis?

Morrison: RIP happens before Final Crisis, and the two issues right after RIP ends tie into Final Crisis and show the connections between the two."

I think I remember DiDio saying that Final Crisis takes place BEFORE R.I.P... which makes it a little weird that Last Rites would follow it in the monthly book, but stranger things have happened. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Yeah, that was pretty stupid of me, wasn't it? I plumb forgot about the second half of the story. Oh well, it happens. Let he who is without sin and all. I wasn't really slamming it, Chris, even if I was being stupid. Throughout the run, Morrison has been focusing a lot on the Silver Age, and I figured he was continuing it here. I'll go back and add something to admit my stupidity, trust me.

Okay, Mr. Faerber, I guess you're off the hook ... for now!

"It’s interesting that Morrison ignores the past 20 years of Batman’s history. Maybe you think we all should, but I just find that interesting."

It's also interesting that you would say this when THE SECOND PART OF THE STORY HASN'T COME OUT.

Please wait to slam the entire story until the entire story is done.

Like Ron said, if you look at the two Alex Ross covers for 682-3, the day-glo explosion of fun this issue (Batman's career up to the early 1980s) gives way to a dark cover that seems to map out the death of Jason Todd and all the other nasty things that have befallen Batman in the past two decades. Dick growing up and going off to be Nightwing and the introduction of Jason is as good a fulcrum point as any to use for the post-Miller "dark soldier" era.
