Superman vs Everyone('s Favorite Character)

Let's face it, Superman is the baseline. And people love to say that their favorite character or villain could beat him up. Who's stronger, Superman or Hulk? Who's faster, Superman or Flash? Who's smarter, Superman or Batman? He's the best, the original, so if your guy can beat him up, well then he must really be something... right?

"I’m going to say “no” to fights against stuff like “Depression” “Natural Disasters” “Bruce Banner vs. his Purple Pants” etc."

That's a bummer. I still say Tony Stark vs. Jack Daniels is one of comics best rivalries and one of it's greatest storylines.

The biggest challenge is not when the heroes face off against their evil counterparts, but when we try to justify how their powers could function in the real world. This is the reason I invoke a "one time miracle exception" to the laws of nature when describing the science behind these heroes (in my book The Physics of Superheroes - who says this isn't the Marvel age of shameless plugs?). So, my list would include:

Flash vs. Conservation of Energy
Cyclops vs. Conservation of Momentum
Hulk vs. Tensile Strength of Pants
Prof. X vs. Decay Range of Electromagnetic Waves
Spider-Man vs. Radiation Poisoning
Ant-Man vs. Conservation of Matter
Sub-Mariner vs. Aerodynamic Lift (ankle wings? really?)
Human Top vs. Conservation of Angular Momentum
Black Bolt vs. Pressure Waves
and
Silver Age Superman vs. Reality

Of course, I am more than willing to suspend my disbelief for each and every one of these heroes. For all they have done for us - it's the least we can do!

I second that emotion:

Image Comics vs. release dates
Superheroes vs. staying dead
Brian Michael Bendis vs. text bubbles
Rob Liefield vs. feet and hands
Grant Morrison vs. coherent crossover events
Marvel Comics vs. light-hearted heroic themes
DC Comics vs. strong movie franchises (Batman excluded)
Frank Miller vs. stories without testosterone
The comic book industry vs. digital comics
Chris Claremont vs. mutant stories that don’t involve time travel
