Yes indeed. The get out of Hell free card is a great MacGuffin, Junior is a genuinely scary villain, and Jeannette vs. The Shark was completely badass. The revelation of Junior’s identity was a good one – it makes sense, it establishes him as more than just a random villain, and Gail mentioned his existence back before this arc even started. So yeah, Gail Simone is all kinds of awesome.

I think its okay to start Villains out as being super hardcore. Without being a significant threat from the get-go, the fans have no reason to support their continued appearance in comics. We have to take these guys seriously in order for the heroes’ triumph over them to be meaningful. Guys like Dr. Octopus, Dr. Doom, and the Joker all kicked major ass from the start.

On the other hand, a hero should not start out being super hardcore, because heroes have much more opportunities at character development than villains. Most people cheer for the underdog and follow heroes to watch them develop and improve as people, the quintessence of this being Spider-Man, who is, in my view, the most compelling super hero of all.

Now, that I don’t get. All villains start out as no-names, and the writer has to build them up somehow. Hell, Ra’s al Ghul started as a no-name, but look what Denny O’Neill did with him in just one story.

I have to admit, I was dragged into the internetz anti-hype that was people bitching over Simone making Junior seem too hardcore and scary for a seemingly no-name villain…but that revelation and the whole brick-throwin’ Bane interrogation might just have been my road to Damascus moment as far as Gail Simone’s writing is concerned.

That was fucking hardcore.
