I'm trying to recommend it to everyone I know who reads comics, but he's just getting trades at the mo... I have to admit going back and reading Final Crisis #1-3 in a row when #3 came out. I get the overall plot, I like the way Morrison uses some of the characters, sometimes the dialogue clicks, the Kirby shout-outs are cool, but some of the details get tricky. I'm reasonably sure it will make sense in the end (mostly, anyway), but I still don't think complaints of confusion are entirely unwarranted. On a slightly related note, I don't think the story is a retread of Rock of Ages, but I do think the events of Final Crisis are what would make the Rock of Ages- future happen. Darkseid won the war, everything's going bleak, and reality's falling apart because "Evil Wins" isn't supposed to happen in a superhero universe, at least not on the sort of cosmic/metaphysical level depicted here. (It's never happened meaningfully on that level in a Marvel crossover, either, since Thanos always realizes he's screwed things up rather badly and undoes his own occasional flights of omnipotence.)
