The Obama Spider-Man Cover is Quite Cool

Nicely done, Phil Jimenez!

Let's just hope Zeb Wells and Todd Nauck do a cool story!

Nice cover, but... why is Spidey taking a picture of the back of Obama's head? And how isn't he dead as a result of a Secret Service Sniper?

("Sir, we have a guy on a thread swinging down behind the President Elect." "Oh, let him be, I'm sure he's just there to take picutres to sell to support his swinging bachelor lifestyle.")

OK, I'll stop now. But good move by Marvel, and not nearly as bromantic as those Larsen Savage Dragon covers.

One of the most historic, inspiring, and anticipated events in modern American history . . .and Marvel puts Wells and frickin' Nauck on the job?

Really?

Stephen.

Obviously, Spiderman beat up all the secret service agents first.

They won't shoot until Aunt May is standing behind him.

He probably told the Secret Service to let Spidey take his picture to make up for appointing Norman Osborn head of HAMMER.

I'm not sure I'm really a fan of the MU Barrack Obama. Does he support the SHRA? Norman Osborne? What's his stance on justice for Bill Foster? These are important questions.

Obama supports Norman Osborne or else he still wouldn't be in charge of HAMMER. The Marvel U Obabma is the same as the real life Obama, an inexperienced glory hound who will spend the next 4 years creating messes we may never recover from with his best bud Pelosi.

You really have no idea how ridiculous you sound, do you?

Pathetic, lame idea, but at least the picture is well-drawn. So glad I gave up superhero comics.

Pathetic, lame idea

Why?

"So glad I gave up superhero comics."
But not superhero comic websites, it seems.

The picture bothers me. Why aren't Obama's ear and left nostril inked heavier? They look weird to me.

Wasn't it established in Secret Invasion #5, page 10 that Obama is a Skrull?

I thought Osbourne was appointed by Bush as one of his last moments in office, in order to really put one up Obama...

Not unless Bush's hands are black, Blackjak.

From an anal-retentive continuity perspective, how was Obama even elected in the Marvel Universe? The MU Public are even more stupid and ignorant than any sector of the real-world America; these are the people who believe that the New Warriors are to blame for Stamford. MU Obama is basically the commander-in-chief of a nation of people with the intellectual abilities of Thanksgiving turkeys.

This is not a superhero comic website.

But if it would get people to stop spewing ignorant bullshit, make mine Marvel.

Blackjack. Yes. According to Andy Diggle, "the former president appointed Osborne on his way out".

Nitz: Colbert's run caused the Republican vote to split between him and McCain.

Thank you, Scavenger!

Thought it made more sense, seeing as Osbourne would have taken up the reins before Obama was inaugurated...

How many different ways can you guys spell "Osborn" wrong?

Eaishzbyiorunwe

There's another.

Oh, they meant Norman Osborn. I thought Ozzy was the HAMMER head. Don't know how I could have missed that...

" Nitz: Colbert’s run caused the Republican vote to split between him and McCain. "

Ahh. So MU Colbert will have the same reputation amongst the Republican Party as Nader had amongst the Democrats in 2000?

Oh how i wish Obama was a Skrull on our world....

I thought Ozzy was the HAMMER head.

No. More evil than that...

Kelly Osbourne...

Norman Osborn never stood a chance, besides, he's dead isn't he? ;-)

I read superhero comics because I want an accurate portrayal of the real world. Please put more real U.S. politicians in my superhero comics. I hear Wisconsin's Senator Feingold enjoys a good Punisher comic from time to time, so why not have him and the Punsiher team up in a 6 page promotional piece story. Actually, that probably wouldn't go over too well with his body guards because the Punisher is wanted for murder. Oh wait, isn't Spider...

They're putting the same number of real US politicians in their comics as they always have, Cass.

Seriously, try to think of a fictional US President in a Marvel comic.

"The picture bothers me. Why aren’t Obama’s ear and left nostril inked heavier? They look weird to me."

Poor Photoshop "coloring," it looks like to me. Stupid lazy computer colorists.

Really?

My guess is that it was a matter of needing the story finished a day after they came up with the idea.

>>The Marvel U Obabma is the same as the real life Obama, an inexperienced glory hound who will spend the next 4 years creating messes we may never recover from with his best bud Pelosi.<<

I'm no fan of ANY politician, really, but for some bizarre reason you seem to be overlooking the fact that if Pelosi (Italian for "accomplice"?) is "best buds" with ANYone in DC, it's the guy at the head of the Illegal Thug Regime now in power.

Jake, I don't remember them ever doing a story featuring Bush Jr (certainly not in the flagship title) nor do I remember them ever calling him by his name, always "Mr. President." The likenesses were usually passing too. The main problem is featuring these guys in stories where Marvel doesn't allow them to actually DO anything meaningful because they're afraid to stir controversy. So while I haven't read the story, in all likelihood, it won't advance anything in the title or any of the Marvel universes, it won't shed new light on the Spider-Man character or his supporting cast, it won't be very funny (although it will try), and it won't attempt to tackle any political issues. To be sure, it'll trot out a couple of the "classic" (read: tired) Spider-Man tropes, but ultimately it'll be a story about two guys jerking each other off in mutual promotion.

But hey, I think Wells is alright, so who knows?

Good point, Brian.

I imagine DC is still waiting for Frank Quitely to finish a special George HW Bush cover from January '89 ...

So... presidents come and go, but Spider-man has only just got out of high school, after how many presidents have been in office? And how many terms have they all served?

That's the "realistic marvel U"? Boy, that Parker kid's a sloooow learner... Get married to a top model? Nah, dreaming.

He'd have to make a deal with the devil to do that, and he's way to dumb...
:-D

@Cass

GW Bush called Captain America "cool" back when the Ultimates were still a big deal and I want to say he was in the post-9/11 Marvel Knights Captain America comic but I'm not sure about that.

Priest also treated George Walker Bush rather well in Black Panther, even allowing him to parley on even terms with hyperpolitical brat Queen Divine Justice. This was after portraying Clinton chasing Everett K. Ross around the White House with a hockey stick for making him look bad.

I have to say that my favorite use of real-life politicians in Marvel comics, however, is in the old Avengers appearances of the Squadron Supreme: on their world, apparently, the other major party candidate always wins the election, which led inevitably to the indelible image of Nelson Rockefeller wearing the Serpent Crown as part of a sinister conspiracy of Set-worshippers.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Snake Reagan yet.

And yet Dick Cheney made even *that* version of Nelson Rockefeller look like Mother Teresa ...

>>I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Snake Reagan yet.

That wasn't fiction.

Was it?

Torn. Want the cover just because... well I teach government and it would be cool to hang on the classroom wall.

But then I've actually stuck to my "No more Amazing Spider-Man" stance since BND.

Decisions... decisions.

"Oh, they meant Norman Osborn. I thought Ozzy was the HAMMER head. Don’t know how I could have missed that…"

If that were the case, I'd be interested in Dark Reign.

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were both in THE ULTIMATES volumes 1 and 2.

Would that mean that the Dewey Defeats Truman paper actually came from earth 712?

By far the best real life politician in comics was when the FF broke into Doom's to find the Doctor hanging out with then secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Doom and Kissinger had come to an accord so the FF couldn't legally touch him.

"This is not a superhero comic website."

It very clearly is.

“This is not a superhero comic website.”

It very clearly is.

It very clearly is not. Use a venn diagram if you're confused. Manga, LGBT and political comics are clearly not in the same subset as superhero comics.

There is very little Manga content on this site and the LGBT comic stuff lasted, what, a week? Don't kid yourself. This is a super-hero comic site. Everything else is secondary.

On the one hand, I really don't much care about how other folks choose to categorize this here site. "Comics Should Be Good is all about chicken-farming!" "Okay, see it that way if you'd like."

On the other hand, take a look at the front page. Right now there are 15 entries on the front page. 7 of them involve superhero comics, 8 do not (unless you really wish to parse words and call John Rozum a "superhero writer" or call Winter Men a "superhero comic").

It's not too difficult to see that this is just a plain ol' comic book site, with a large portion of it being superhero-related, but just as much being about other comics.

Fair enough. I may be getting Goodcomics mixed up with CBR in general.

Yeah, the main site probably IS more superhero driven, that's probably fair to say (Note "probably," as I never really gave it much thought - a quick glance at the current front page for the main site shows a fairly even mix, to be honest - now the CBR FORUMS, they're DEFINITELY superhero driven - no "probably" there!).

By the way, since I made my comment, we had four more entries, none of which were about superhero comics (okay, one of them was a list of good writers and some of the writers on that list write superhero comics, so maybe that can count as a 1/2! :) )

>> “Comics Should Be Good is all about chicken-farming!”

I INSIST that you post a topic fitting this one.
