Top Five Most-Anticipated Books in 2009

Besides making his own picks, Alan David Doane asked a few folks (myself included) to state which five books they were most anticipating in 2009.

See the answers here.

Scavenging from the answers there, I’m most excited about League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen III, the Saga Of The Swamp Thing hardcovers, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe, Darwyn Cooke’s first Parker graphic novel, the next volume of Love And Rockets, and the final issue of Planetary (fingers crossed on that last one)

I also saw someone mention Marshall Law as getting reprinted. If that’s so, sign me up for that one too. One hopeful also listed the Showcase edition of Suicide Squad. Here’s hoping that wish proves fruitful on that one, as I’ve been anxious for DC to put it out for over a year now.

Of the stuff NOT on anyone’s list, I’d add my own personal excitement for Mike Grell’s return to Warlord (WARLORD! Yeah!!) and the new Power Girl series, which I am most excited for because of Amanda Conner’s artwork.

Great link, BeeCee!

Surprisingly, 3 of the 5 books I’m waiting for are from Los Bros Herandez:
- The Troublemakers: Even though I pre-ordered it a while back, I’m glad its coming soon
- George Sprott: Seth has yet to disappoint
- Locas II- Even though I have the issues, I’m a sucker for L&R in HCs
- Love and Rockerts New Stories #2
- Darwyn Cooke’s Parker HCs from IDW

Oh…and the new Power Girl series

No one mentioned this, but Starman gets two collections this year

Definitely excited about those Starman Omnibuses (Omnibi?) too. The third one will finally collect the Shade mini-series for anybody who might have missed out on it the first time around.

I saw a listing on another blog of upcoming DC collections that included a new version of the first Hitman trade. It looks to be the first in a new series of collections for that series. Which will be amazing if it comes true…

What, no love for Frankenstein’s Womb?

The top five comics I’m looking forward to:

5) DIE-CUT AVENGERS
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Slicko Foreignartistio
ETA: Depressingly often

More boundary-pushing, experimental stuff from Brian Michael Bendis!!

4) FINAL CRISIS—the last two fuckin’ issues!!
Writer: God
Artist: Given up
ETA: A month of Sundays

Grant Morrison’s inexplicable epic hurtles towards its confusing conclusion!!

3) ALAN MOORE’S ADVENTURES IN PORNOGRAPHY
Writer: Grumpy Bastard
Artist: Scratchy Artist
ETA: Way later than you expect

Why the hell did DC fire him!!??!

2) HOLOFOIL AVENGERS
Writer: Brian Sellout Bendis
Artist: Does it matter?
ETA: The exact point you quit comics

Gritty, down-to-earth superstar writer Bendis does it again!!

1) BIG EVENT
Evil masterminds: Joe Al’Quesada / Dan Didiot
ETA: The rest of your life

BIG EVENT is set to rule 2009!! BIG EVENT is sure to be the big event to change all big events forever!!

Bring on 2009!!!

Sam, this is the most impressive display of snark I have seen in years.

My 5:

1) Fantastic Four by Mike Millar—he’s energized an old title
2) More experimentation by DC—I see several new number 1s offered this year at $2.99 and one of them might be good
3) Realization by Marvel that $3.99 comics sell less, turn off the fans, and hurt their company
4) Something new from Sergio Aragones (I pray)
5) The new editors-in-chief at DC and Marvel (again, I pray)
