"Anyway, Nightwing is the sidekick who made good, and became his own man, moving out of his mentor’s shadow but maintaining the connection. It’s a very powerful character hook (unlike Wally, who is… or was… the “sidekick who stepped into his mentor’s shoes and continued his work” character). I never understood why “he’ll never be Batman” was something WRONG with the character; in my eyes, it’s nothing but a positive. Dick doesn’t have the obsessive drive Bruce does, which is necessary to be Batman. But he is a natural hero and leader in his own right, which is why the Nightwing identity works as well as it does."

I couldn't have put it better, Stephen!

And all the writers on 52 get the same kind of treatment as him, Rucka, Morrison and Waid get to pretty much do whatever they want.

If that was true, Mark Waid would be writing Superman every month

Love this column ... it's fascinating & cool read ...

Thrilled Dick Grayson wasn't killed off though I think if there's gonna be a new Batman, I would love for it to be someone completely new. Grayson's great as Nightwing, Drake as Robin - Todd & Damien, eh. Battle for the Cowl seems like a bit of a silly concept but who knows?

Will say I liked Winick's Red Hood storyline all things considered. Like a post said above if they were gonna bring him back I don't see why they didn't just make him Hush.

Trinity I just look at Busiek having some fun with a psuedo-elseworlds. It doesn't have to "fit" into anything, just like Brave and the Bold and the (suddenly, unexpectedly great) Superman / Batman (seriously!) don't.

I never knew Gotham Knights was hated, at least in the original "modern Batman Family" incarnation - there were some really good stories in there, such as the aforementioned adoption story and the one showing exactly what Bruce Wayne does all day. I'd agree that it went off the rails after that, what with the whole "Prometheus is Hush's sidekick" thing that was recently retconned with extreme prejudice.

Well, it's a stretch for "Trinity" (purportedly to focus on the "need" for Superman, Batman (Bruce Wayne), and Wonder Woman to form the pillar of the DC super-hero community) to be running at the same time as Final Crisis, Batman R.I.P., The Battle for the Cowl, and so on... but that's comics.

Now that DC is re-creating the Bat-line, ending titles left and right, bringing in older characters that never went anywhere to begin with, and Marvel doing basically the same, bringing back concepts that were old when I was a kid, I feel no trepidation toward moving on. The Final Crisis is truly the final one for me... Enjoy your escapes to the alternate universes, folks...

Peace out.

Dick Grayson really is one of the few characters who has developed and become his own man -to kill him for shock value really would have been stupid....

And Dick might not want to but he really is the ONLY option to take up the cowl for the simple reason... when Batman is sitting at the JLA meeting table with Superman and Wonder Woman who else is going to get the same level of respect from these two that Bruce gets?

It's a stretch for Tim to get a seat at the table, let alone Jason Todd or any of the other "candidates"

Wow ! Had no idea Namor's Atlantis came after Aquaman's or that it took 18 years for Orin to have it worked in.

I'd love to have reprints of the French Surfer.

Nightwing has always been kinda cool. I can kind of see Didio's thinking about him not being Batman or Robin but that Kevin Bacon angle is classic. That and the fact that Dick is more well adjusted than Bruce.

"He’s also officially adopted by Bruce, and has been for a while now. Good story in Gotham Knights that dealt with that."--Nobody remembers that dude. Have you forgoten? All fans are required to hate Gotham Knights and every story in it, even though it was, pound for pound, a pretty darn good Batman book.

"So just to be clear, it was DC and Didio’s original intent to kill the understudies of Superman (Superboy), Batman (Dick Grayson), AND the Flash (Bart Allen) all within the span of a year or so?"

No, there are some articles out there that make it clear that when Didio couldn't kill Nightwing, the decision was made to kill Superboy. As Didio said "We were looking for the big death in Infinite Crisis – the big moment." Just do a search on Nightwing, Superboy, and Crisis.

For everyone trying to justify the wackiness of Namor's "living room," look, you really just have to ride the madness in that panel. I mean, look at it! He's sitting on a clam chair! He's watching a coral reef TV! He's got a picture of someone else's woman, from another world, framed in a coral reef frame, sitting a top a starfish desk, as if nothing is wrong with it! Look at the crazy fish sculpture! What in the world is that lamp made out of? Where did he even get these pieces of "furniture?" Is that a black and green wall a seawood corridor, or something? And look at the bemused, yet attentive look on Namor's face, as he listens to some news station talk about the FF going bankrupt, as he turns up the volume on his coral TV. It's utter wackiness, and yet, it makes complete sense. This one panel exemplifies everything good about wacky comics. More comics should be like this.

In Namor's defense ... I made friends with this young lady over the internet a few years back, and we exchanged pics eventually. I framed it. Eventually, she met this guy and they got married. We're still friends. And I still have the pic and the frame.

On the other hand, I never tried to get her to run off with me and become my queen, so maybe it's a little bit different.

Thank God for Paul Levitz! Having Dick Grayson killed off after all those years of character development by Wolfman and Perez would have stirred up yet another hornet's nest for Didio. There is no logic whatsoever in assuming Nightwing HAS to be Batman. He's the best candidate for the role, but also a great character in his own right.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jason Todd take up the Batman mantle. Then they can go the way of Azrael and have Jason running amok in Gotham until Bruce makes his next return. It's just like 90's all over again...
