I think it’s something to do with the monster’s expression– some kind of infernal mix of “yawn” and “squee”– and the thought balloon– and his name being Professor Townsend. Cracks me up.

I think it’s because maybe the artist interpreted the script directions “terrifying beetle monster” as ” big sad bird”.

The thought balloon reminds me of one of those romance comics covers where the person in the foreground is staring off pensively thinking “I’m in love with A, but how can I tell B” while person B is just walking in the door in the background.
