A defining moment for comics as one of the coolest concepts in superheroes is born. As a child of the 70's and 80's, Hal Jordan is "my" Green Lantern. I soon discovered Alan Scott and loved him too. Then came Guy, John, Kilowog, Kyle, ect, and they grew on me as well. But Hal and the Oath will always be what truly defines the Green Lantern "family" for me.

Regardless, when my dad got me the silver age classics reprint of Showcase #22 when I was probably 6 or so…this page was the moment I fell in love with comics.

I was the same way, only with the Silver Age Classics reprints of the first JLA appearance, and the first 'New Look' Batman-- which had Elongated Man in it! The rest was history.

I'm pretty sure that Alan Scott used the "In Brightest Day" oath at times though it certainly wasn't his original oath (the rather bland "And I Shall Shed My Light Over Dark Evil" oath). Regardless, when my dad got me the silver age classics reprint of Showcase #22 when I was probably 6 or so...this page was the moment I fell in love with comics.

When I was a teen, a group of us kids hiked deep up into the woods of Foster, Rhode Island to spend the night in an old abandonned 1 room cabin we had found during an earlier trip. It was kind of scary for lot of us, sleeping on the floor of an old shack with no windows, doors or lights, and no nearby road. To pass the time (as much to ensure none of us were whisked away by some murderer or beast in the pitch black), most of us came up with a short poem or limerick (some based on nursery rhymes). This one kid, Earl Buteau by name, shushed us all to grace us with his:

"Can you Hear IT?
Must be a Hermit".

You could hear a pin drop - until the rest of us laughed so loud we were in tears. Richard J. Marcej? You are my Earl Buteau today. And I thank you for that.

My understanding is that Bester denied inventing the oath, but that's just from the Green Lantern entry on Wikipedia:

"However, in an interview with journalist F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre at the 1979 World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton, England, Bester stated that the brightest-day oath was already in place before he began writing for the character."

I figure Bester would know best, but of course I'd be happier with a transcript or something than just being told that he said that.
