Taking a Look at the YALSA List
January 29, 2009 @ 10:09 AM
My buddy Kristen dropped me a line to say that I should show folks here the list of the Young Adult Library Services Association 2009 “Great Graphic Novels for Teens.”
How could I deny Kristen?!?
So here is the list!
I agree with Kristen, also, that the description of Umbrella Academy is priceless:
When you come from a family of superheroes, don’t piss off your sister.

This list seems to be missing Blue Beetle: Endgame. Given that Shellshocked and Road Trip made their 2008 top 10 list, this seems like a horrible oversight.

Thanks for the compliment on the annotations! That’s one I liked myself when we arrived at it during the annotation crunch!

That’s a pretty solid list but Thok’s right – where’s Blue Beetle?

That list is pretty heavy on the manga, don’t you think?

It is for teens, not middle aged guys trying to hang on to their youth.

High school and public library teen collections are consistently heavy on the manga. Based mostly on demand. The librarians themselves tend more to the American stuff than their students do, but at the end of the day they have to buy what will get read. Says something about the future of the industry.

Kristen beat me to it. But yeah, heavy on the manga is pretty much a ‘duh’ for anyone looking for comics with youth appeal these days. What fans think of as ‘mainstream’ hasn’t actually BEEN mainstream for at least a decade.
