Top Five Super Villains Who Remind me of Dick Cheney

Read on!

Okay, I'm just messing around, and quite honestly, I personally try to avoid political snark myself, but seriously, if someone on a comic blog wants to make a topical political reference, whether it be anti-Cheney or anti-whoever, during a comic book review, I have no problem with it.

And when the comic in question involves a caricature of Dick Cheney, as The Plaid Avenger #1 does, then making a comment like (as Brad Curran did in his review of the comic here)

Dick Cheney, is a rifle toting, grimacing hard ass (okay, that’s not too much of an exaggeration). Vladimir Putin’s head is dwarfed by his giant army hat. Putin and Cheney come across as super villains. Okay, that last part really isn’t much of an exaggeration.

is so far from off-limits that it's ridiculous.

I mean, come on, comic book writers clearly draw from real life politics quite a lot, so if it is in the comic book itself, the notion that it should be a taboo subject for a reviewer strikes me as quite wrong.

Now if you're reviewing the latest issue of Betty and Veronica, and you start tossing into anti-Cheney references out of nowhere, then that's a different story.

This doesn't mean you have to agree with the reviewer, heck, feel free to express your displeasure, but there's a large difference between "I disagree with you" and "You shouldn't have political references in reviews."

I didn't expect to see Batroc on here.

Hell, Catwoman was the one that really surprised me.

What, no Dr. Doom? He's a better fit then Batroc.

I did like the moment in comics recently where someone asked the Penguin to do his Cheney impression.

I personally never considered the Elf with a Gun from Gerber's Defenders run to be a super-villain, but I can see why you would include him.

I think there's a lot of similarity between Cheney and Burgess Meredith's performance as the Penguin, actually.

I still can't figure out how Cheney was defeated at the end of Final Crisis.

I didn't think Cheney was much of an actor, but that movie The Day After Tomorrow proved me wrong.

Laugh all you want, but when Cheney puts on his refridgerator-sized suit of anti-Superman armor, you're going to be sorry.

I like that one episode of JLA where Cheney says "f- you" to Luthor when he's leaving a Legion of Doom meeting, then shoots Bizarro in the face. Classic.

I still can't believe that Cheney once controlled the Infinity Gauntlet.

Due to the floating timeline, Nixon was replaced by Cheney as the head of the Secret Empire. ;)

And, thank you for proving you just don't get it, Brian...... Just like Brad.

The review would have been fine without the "exaggeration" lines, even if the replacements were other jokes at Cheney's expense concerning his appearance in the comic. Hell, even my Republican friends had fun joking about the Cheney hunting accident for almost a month after it occurred.

Brad's snarky comments were about equating the MAN with the cariacture, not the parody itself. Is it off-limits? Maybe not, especially given the target audience of the comic. It is, however, VERY bad form, if you want to give the reviews a more professional look.

Be truthful - how offended would you have gotten if someone had made negative personal comments about Obama (unrelated or tangental to the review) when reviewing Obama's recent appearance in comics? Or, if someone made snide comments derogatory to the real Roman Catholic Church, in the process of reviewing "Battle Pope"?

You let standards slip for one situation where you may somewhat agree (or just find it funny), it opens the floodgates for all other situations - especially ones you may not want yourself associated with.

After all, wasn't it Todd McFarlane's snarky use of and comments in Spawn, about a hockey player he disliked, that eventually got him in hot water? You really don't want to blur the lines too much. If you want a comic to be educational, like the creator did, you don't want it to go so far into parody that it will get dismissed off-hand. Frankly, the whole synopsis of the book read like it was meant as a political piece being passed off as an educational one, not truly an educational comic.

You did a special series on Political cartoonists past and present, in recent months. Try looking at the comic being reviewed through THAT lens, without looking at the "educator" angle.

I would not have given a shit. Just like with Brad's comments.

No, no it wasn't.

To choose one cartoonist that I featured (at more or less random, as he was the first one to pop to my head), Doug Marlette CONSTANTLY (and I mean CONSTANTLY) did EXACTLY what Brad did in his review, throw in snarky asides about political figures while discussing other stuff critically. CONSTANTLY.

So, yeah, I think you are wrong.

But I won't thank you for it.

"It is, however, VERY bad form, if you want to give the reviews a more professional look."

Disagree.

Professional reviewers of many other media, from novels to movies, seem to feel free to include political commentary when reviewing works that have political resonance.

I have to agree with Brian. This seems to be a case of making up a rule (no political commentary in reviews!) to create the appearance of an objective basis for one's negative reaction.

Granny Goodness should have been number 3, at least.

Obviously, he's the product of a same sex union between Egghead and the Rhino.

But remember, whatever he is, he's Obama's cousin, so in insulting a republican we're insulting the democrats, so .... win-win.
