One hopes that another Steranko moment comes in the list.

The Nightmare splash page from Captain America 111

He may be as crazy as a loon, with that Ayn Rand stuff, but the man could draw better than most of the artists out there.

Steranko was the absolute master. The perfect blend of Romita/Adams/Buscema's sleek beauty and Kirby 's explosive grandeur. Everything was over the top in the way that only comic books can be. In the best ways.

Steranko also loved the rubber mask conceit, whether it was numerous Hydra villains, Yellow Claw, Baron Von Strucker, or Nick Fury himself. Sure, it was goofy, but that WAS a popular ridiculous super-spy story device - Mission:Impossible, for example - and Lee/Ditko used the "leave a rubber mask behind to plant doubt re: one's identity" with the Terrible Tinkerer way back in ASM. THAT, alone, gives it comic book precedence...so, you either accept the crazy Marvel world or not.

oh...and CA #113 is one of my all-time favorite covers. Ever.

What was the Roy Thomas/Steve Englehart retcon on Cap's secret ID? 'Cause honestly the Steve Rogers mask never made a lick of sense to me.

My favourite Captain America run is still Mark Gruenwald's but you can't argue with full-page spreads like these!
Brian, are you planning on showing some moments from Steranko's run on Nick Fury?

Steranko needs to come back to comics, man. It's been too long.

Also: is this, like, Steranko week for A Year of Cool Comic Book Moments? Because he definitely deserves the praise.

I absolutely love those Steranko issues. Though for raw awesome moments I prefer the double page spread that's in the graveyard. If you've seen it then you know what I'm talking about immediately.

Aw but who can complain about Steranko splash pages. By definition they're all "cool comic book moments".

Randomly, those were the first Captain America issues I ever read. And they remain my favorite to this day.

Those Steranko issues were some of the first Cap stories I ever read about 15 years ago and the reason I still love the character today despite being Irish!

They were collected in a hardcover "annual" for the UK market that I picked up in my early teens.
