Speaking of Superhero Catch Phrases
King Oblivion sent me a link this piece a little while ago, and oddly enough, it was NOT the impetus for Catch Phrase Week at the Year of Cool Comic Book Moments, but still, it’s a funny bit nonetheless!
So here are “10 Superheroes Who Need New Catch Phrases” (along with suggestions for new phrases).

Another catch-phrase that I’m soooooooooooooooo sick and tired of reading is :
“look, up in the sky, it’s a bird, no, it’s a plane, no, it’s Superman!!!”
“faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive, and able to leap buildings with single bound!”
Blah, blah, blah.
How completely and utterly dated!
Please somebody get a spin doctor!!!

Brian, you are a brother in villainy.
And don’t worry, folks. We’ll be taking on our own kind, supervillains, and their catchphrases in a piece set to go up tomorrow.

Love that “You wouldn’t like me when I’m Ang Lee”..
Disagree about the GL one though… I don’t remember him saying it before a fight, only for re-charging the ring… But then I’m not a HUGE GL fan, just a casual reader…
And yeah… ” Ah am der lawuh” has really been butchered by the Stallone film… Robocop was really the best onscreen interpretation of Dredd. Maybe the new film currently in development will actually be truer to the character (after all Rebellion are funding it and Jock is doing the designs instead of Jean-Paul Gaultier, so….)

GL’s is not in fact a catch phrase. It is more of a motto, or a pledge. It is not said as a rallying or battle cry.
Having said that I do not think the author is really that concerned with the semantics. I am sure he is more interested in the comedic value.

Truth, Justice, and the American Way.
Luke Cage and The Thing get to keep their catchphrases, cause really who’s going to take them away?

Well I don’t really agree on the idea the catch phrases should not reveal what the hero is about to do. If you are a villain and you see the Thing, he is obviously going to take you on, so the Thing saying “It’s clobbering time” doesn’t give any real warning. Same is true for the Human Torch and “flame on,” what else is going to do, throw rocks at you? Its more for making an enemy feel fearful than an admission of your immediate strategy.

I also know someone who loves to use the, “You wouldn’t like me when I’m Ang Lee.” line.
I do myself, so I really had to laugh when I read that.
