I stopped reading the book before it was canceled, so I've never seen this. Kind of interesting (but I still think the book was never the same after Luke McDonnell and Karl Kesel left as the art team).

While the art wasn't always that great--there were exceptions--the art suited the stories & mood of the premise--for that reason I looked past it.

But I wouldn't say it was horrible.

I really miss that series--it was great, and they even printed a few of my letters.

The build up to this scene was well done as well.

The art here reminds me of earlier issues, drawn I think by Luke McDonnel.

I'd pick this up in Showcae format.

You could have a whole week of Suicide Squad moments. The Red Shadows unmasking Batman. Amanda Waller hit in the face with a pie. The Writer "writing" Black Adam's dialog. The first appearance of Oracle.

Of course, considering Ostrander's next use of Count Vertigo (over in Spectre), this doesn't come off as a particularly hopeful note in re-reads...

I've got to tell you, Apodaca, I read the whole series from start to finish and I found the ending to be very disappointing. That whole last issue seemed very rushed and, with the exception of the whole Incubus storyline, was a low point in an otherwise extraordinary series.

Maybe it's just a lack of investment or connection to the character, but that scene seemed really hollow to me.

The really neat thing about this scene (okay, *a* really neat thing about this scene) is that they wrote it out both ways. Either the last panels would be Vertigo saying no, and the cliff standing empty, or Vertigo saying yes, and the final panel is the gunshot sound effect. Both are totally in-character. Both would be powerful ways to end the series.

That they chose to end on a hopeful note is fantastic. That they considered both just goes to show you why the series was so damn good overall.

I would’ve bet the farm that Deadshot would just cap him anyway. But yeah. I suppose this works better thematically.

If it was under today's Didio DC I'm sure Deadshot would have capped him anyway, because it would have been cruel, sadistic, gratuitous, is subtle as a heart attack and utterly lacking in logic. But this was Jeannette Kahn's DC, where the comics made more sense and the violence wasn't as gratuitous. Deadshot had nothing to gain from killing him anyway. He's not a Mr. Zsasz or Joker that derives glee from slaughter.

It really was a great book. Characters I'd never heard of before, like Nemesis, became favorites. For other moments, how about the first Batman/Waller confrontation. Two people who depend on the "intimidation factor" trying to intimidate each other. I also liked the Batman/Deadshot moment that explained why the world's greatest marksmen was never ably to hit a guy dress in a bat suit.
