Almost as Good as a Dylan Reference...
- by Brian Cronin
- in General
Here's the Band reference that I, well, referenced in my piece on Peter Tomasi's Nightwing run. Dan Phillips wrote in to tell me I had to mention this, and I meant to, but I couldn't find a scan. Luckily, helpful reader Zach sent me a scan of the scene from Nightwing #150, so, well, enjoy!
Barbara Gordon is helping Dick set up a new security system and a new firewall, but Dick can't stick around to talk long because he has to go hunt down Two-Face.
And here is the scene, including a quotation from the great Band song (off of the Band's 1971 release, Cahoots), "Life is a Carnival." It works doubly as a reference, of course, due to Dick's circus background. Great scene by Tomasi.
Here is a link to the song on YouTube, in case you don't know it. I would just embed the video, but it weirds me out.

I'm still laughing at the use of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" in this week's Heroes. Perfect placement.

the smile on Babs face over hearing the pick and Dick's comment is worth the issue just to skip to that scene

Thats the best Dick Greyson scene I have ever seen. It sets up who he is in truth. He is a circus acrobat trained in the martial arts by the Bats. He uses a few of Bruces toys but not too many. I would like to see Dick found a team. Not the Titans or Outsiders, but a team he put together for a reason.

Has anyone been noticing all the great Warren Zevon Quotes Tomasi has been putting into his books over the last year or so?

No, fill me in!
I fear that a lot of great Zevon lines actually sound like, you know, actual lines of dialogue, so I fear I may have missed them. So tell me where they appear!

Ha. This is why Tomasi's one of my fave DCU writers.

Why is playing "Psycho Killer" when there's a psycho killer around funny? It sounds really stupid.

What Dylan reference? The one from one of Tomasi's first issues of Nightwing?
