Rucka’s been working on the comic for two years, but DC kept on pushing back when they were going to announce it. Finally, Didio decided it would be best if the comic coincided with the Battle for the Cowl deal.

Ass-kicking, girl-kissing Batwoman sounds a heckuva lot like Xena to me–and being a big Xena fan, I think that’s good news. Not to mention Williams’ great art. Me, I don’t know Rucka, because I bought a few comics he’d written, didn’t like them, and so now steer clear of what I anticipate is a boring, so-called “streetwise, gritty, down in the dirt”-kind of take on things that he and so many other writers propagate. But my perception is also that he does character development reasonably well. So besides the ass-kicking and maybe some cool gadgets, that’s what I want to see more of regarding Kate Kane. But please, don’t let him confuse character development–which is how one grows and changes emotionally and morally–with bedroom scenes and bitchy quippage. The former demands thoughtful plots and dialogue, while the latter are cheap and gratuitous.

Misfit? Really? Gail basically made her up as a one-note joke and she stuck around because Canary got yanked away and they needed more ongoing characters.

Anyway, Huntress and Batgirl (and Manhunter, the one character of that bunch who I’d argue does deserve more exposure) are going to be in their own book come the relaunches, Spoiler’s not cut out for a lead character role (which is fine, there’s merit in being a good supporting player without upward mobility) and Onyx… wait, who the heck is Onyx? The girl that showed up around War Games?

DC wanted a Batgirl-type, but at least had the sense to know that Barbara is better utilised as Oracle. Making her a lesbian was crass, no doubt, but not much more than that. But considering that she’s not even getting her own book, I don’t really see how much more attention is being focused on her other than the fact that she made her debut in a very high-profile book (52) and has barely been heard from since. There’s always going to be intrigue built up in a situation like that.

As for the Justice League thing… I think JLElite and Outsiders have shown that the Cassie character isn’t really a good team type.

Batwoman needs to be proven as something more then a lesbian version of Barbara Gordon and i don’t think Rucka can do it. His Wonder Woman stuff that i read was just okay and I was throughly uninterested in Batwoman’s parts in Final Crisis, Revelation, and the Five Books of Blood. I think that by the time this is over the fans will realize that Kate Kane should not be given all this attention and characters like Onyx, Huntress, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Spoiler, Misfit, and the underused GCPD should get the attention that she has gotten.
Does anyone really think that James Robinson wanted her on his Justice League team, i’d love to see (since the villain is prometheus and thats been announced) Batgirl (Cassie Cain) whose the best martial artist in the DCU go up against Prometheus.
Batwoman’s an attempt to appeal to the worst in the Fanboys, the thing that jokes are made off that it’s a group of at least semi-perverted guys who are shut ins or NEETs (japanese Hikkikomoris)/

I would have thought there must be a curator somewhere wondering what that spinning noise must be coming from the graveyard…

As for “The Distinguished Competition”‘s announcement, yes, I had heard, and I’m really, really looking forward to it… I enjoy the idea of Detective Comics featuring a detective other than Batman, written by someone who can write Crime stories, and really seems to have a handle on Batwoman.

So, in my case, you win some, you lose some…

I’ve had a subscription to Marvel DCU for 2 years now (pretty much since it started) and I love it. The interface is relatively straightfoward. If all you’re trying out are the free comics it might be a little less effective, but I’ve had no problems with it myself.

I work in a call center, so I spend all day looking for stuff to do online and the Marvel DCU is awesome for that.

Agreed. I would sign up for the Marvel DCU today if the interface were tolerable. Alas… it is not.

Ditto to the mad praise for JH Williams III. I finally read all five volumes of Promethea recently, and I can’t imagine passing on any of his work now.

I am kind of amazed it took them this long to get her in a starring role.

Word on the street (and by street I mean the internets) is that DC was scared off of having a guy titular character due to the sudden media attention to ‘gay Batwoman’ almost two years ago. Now they’ve found a spot where they can finally fit her without having the title refer to their gay character, seemingly forgetting what DC actually stands for.

Anyway, I’m glad it’s finally getting published. I don’t really care what title it’s serialized in, it’s Greg Rucka & J.H. Williams III on a Bat-title, how can it go wrong?
