A Less Serious Look at the Watchmen

Tyson Wright suggested you folks would get a kick out of this, and I think he’s probably right, so check out….”WTF is Watchmen?” a cute short video.

Haha, this is how the people who haven’t read it feel about the trailers.

LOL “Possibly dinosaurs?”

Finally, somebody agrees with me: What does the GENERAL PUBLIC know about Watchmen? ZILCH. Comics fans will see it, but will that be enough to make it the blockbuster Warner wants it to be? (in my opinion, they should have linked it to ‘Dark Knight”, i.e., “Based on a Graphic novel, like The Dark Knight!” “Exploring the dark side of Heroes, like The Dark Knight!” Or even feature the trailer in the Dark Knight DVDs. (Or is it already?)

The original trailer is on the Dark Knight DVDs (before you even get to the main menu)
Strangely enough, so is a trailer for Batman Begins, so maybe WB was just threw any good looking comic trailers they had at it.

I just figured they knew the sales of the Dark Knight on DVD would crush what they’d already sold for Begins, and thus they could maybe sell some more “Begins” by saying “This is part one!”

Hey, my name on the front page of CSBG! I’m finally famous!

I can’t believe the voice of Solid Snake is such a harmless-looking geek in real life.

This brings up something that occurred to me last year… when they mentioned at San Diego that Watchmen was selling out throughout the con….
How many thousands of comics fans have been using Watchmen as an excuse for reading other comics? (I.e., “Watchmen re-invented superheroes and influenced everything since. Therefore it’s perfectly acceptable for me to be reading Hulk and Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose, because you don’t understand how intellectual I’m really being.”) Even though many may well never have read the book in the first place?
I think that when some of these people suddenly realised that the film was really going to be released, they ran and grabbed a copy, deciding that they really ought to actually READ the book before any of their friends saw the movie…
Did we have a similar surge in purchases of DKR before this summer? I don’t think so. I think a bunch of people suddenly realised that all their colleagues were going to be quizzing them on one of the most famous graphic novels that they hadn’t read, and decided to swot up…

Brilliant!

Hah! Love it. Blackjack, I think you could be right. I’ve already read it, but know I’ll be quizzed, as I always am after any comic book films. I feel strangely compelled to read it again, so I can maintain my geek status and be ready for any answers they throw at me though.

I first read it years ago, but sure I felt compelled to read it again before the movie comes out. Read it last week (yes, including the pirate bits), and found it even more amazing than I did the first time. But then again, I tend to do the same thing with novels, so perhaps it’s just me.

I know I’m in the minority, but I *never* felt compelled to read Watchmen, and I still don’t. Years ago I saw it at a store, browsed it, decided it wasn’t my thing and put it back on the shelf. I’m not even planning to see the movie in theaters- I’ll catch it on DVD or TV later. If there’s nothing better to watch at the time.

However, I certainly wish success for the movie and the people connected to it, that can only do good to the industry. I’m just not terribly motivated to see superheroes being miserable. No matter how artsy the comic/film.

Well, I HAVE read Watchmen SEVARAL times, I just re-read it AGAIN and I’ve been following the Re-Reading Watchment column here at CBR (among other columns and blogs) so I think I can I’ll tell you what Watchmen’s all about.

It’s about…well, there are these people…who…do things.. well, they don’t always do things…they talk…a lot about…stuff…..then things….happen….

Wait! Wait! I can do this! It’s about a guy with no face..and…and, uh…oh, and a blue dude with no pants who…no, wait!

Oh, bugger!

Having just seen the movie at a reviewer preview, I have to say that I cannot imagine how someone who has not read the comic could possibly follow the movie. While the movie looks great, it just seems impossibly dense for a n00b to appreciate.

Is that actually David Hayter? He’s a great sport if it is.

I thought this video was OK. That movie theater the guy is standing outside of is only a block or so away from my apartment. They play movies for the latte crowd though, and I don’t expect them to be showing Watchmen there, sadly.

And Sijo? The heroes aren’t really miserable- they’re just faced with adversity. You know, ’cause it’s a story- which requires some form of conflict. But maybe you’d prefer another sequel to Mannequin instead.

And who did you honestly think cares that YOU have no interest in the book or movie? Do I go on the Oprah website and go “Eh, I never watch that show. I don’t like whiny fat women very much. I might see one passing down the street some day, though.” Thanks for nothing, chump.
