Comics Should Be Good March Madness!
Why let the basketball fans have all the fun?
So today begins Comics Should Be Good DC/Marvel Comic Character Tournament!
As the basketball tournament goes along, so will a series of polls matching various comic book characters against each other. You'll have 24 hours (from when the polls go up) to pick whichever character is your favorite in each match-up (judged by whether they're more interesting, more appealing, whatever criteria you feel like choosing). The winner will advance to the next round, so on and so forth until we get a champion on April 6th!
To seed the characters, I used their rankings from the Top DC/Marvel Characters poll from a year or so ago. I like these rankings because they're quite unpredictable, as who knows if characters are as popular as they were back then?
Here is the tournament bracket - click on it to get the full bracket and feel free to print it out if you'd like (I dunno if it fits on one page or not).
And tell you what, I'll give you folks until 6:00 PM (Eastern) to pick who you think the overall winner (and the Final four) will be (with the winner getting some sort of prize), at which point I'll put up the first region of the bracket (with the next region to follow at 8pm, and tomorrow the brackets will go up earlier, to give folks more time to vote - our second round will be on Monday and Tuesday, by the way, instead of Saturday and Sunday).
Read on to see a list of the rankings inside each region (in non-bracket format). This is where you should check if you're unsure which character we're talking about (for characters who have had more than one person use the name):

Sorta a bummer that it's only DC/Marvel...your bias is showing
I am, however, looking forward to Zatanna being trounced

This cracks me up, Batman / Firestorm is just sad. Starman / Green Lantern bracket is gonna cause people to loose sleep. But I predict the true under dog to watch will be Death, but what do I know.
Is Vegas giving odds? later!

okay i'm pumped! so should we post our final four pics here or wait for a separate post?

March 19, 2009 at 11:28 am
So how do we vote in this thing?
Kyle
March 19, 2009 at 11:30 am
My picks are pretty predictable, but I actually went through the whole thing, picking my favorite for each match-up, and this is what I got:
Final four: Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Captain America.
The winner: Batman.

I don't get what we're supposed to do. How is it decided who wins?
Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 11:35 am
At 6pm, I'll post Region 4's match-ups.
At 8pm, I'll post Region 3's match-ups.
Then tomorrow at noon I'll post Region 1's match-ups and tomorrow at 2pm I'll post Region 2's match-ups.
It'll all be in the form of individual polls.
I'm just posting the brackets now so people can get a good look at the brackets before the voting begins later.
All you're doing now is predicting who you think will win (and your Final Four).

March 19, 2009 at 11:38 am
Do we pick whom we think would win in a fight, or do we pick the character we think is more interesting?
Theno
Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 11:41 am
Ah, I see the confusion. "Who you like best" is often used to discuss fights, as well, isn't it? "Who do you like in this match?"
Anyhow, no, I mean you're voting on who you find more interesting/more appealing/plain ol' like more.
Tuomas
March 19, 2009 at 11:42 am
If we'd pick the one who'd win in a fight, it'd be quite obvious that Death would win the whole tournament. She'll always win in the end.

March 19, 2009 at 11:45 am
Which Captain Marvel is that? I'd assume Billy Batson, but there's about 50 different characters who've used that name.

March 19, 2009 at 11:45 am
I ended up with Dream, Thanos, Joker and J'onn J'onz in the Final Four, with Dream taking the Championship. That is not how I expected it to end up at all.
Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 11:47 am
That's another reason I listed all the names above, Conor, because I didn't have space for anything but Captain Marvel, and I didn't know how else to abbreviate it "CM ( Billy)"?
But yeah, that's Billy Batson.

I'm glad you clarified the intended criteria - I was all set to vote based on implicit basketball skills....
Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 11:49 am
I edited the brackets to show that it is Billy Batson, just to make sure!
Nick Marino
March 19, 2009 at 11:51 am
Cronin sayz: "Anyhow, no, I mean you’re voting on who you find more interesting/more appealing/plain ol’ like more."
OHHH well that changes everything! I totally picked it based on who would whoop up on who. for that, I had Thanos, Doom, Wonder Woman, and GL (Hal). but if we're doing interesting / like more... i have to redo this whole damn thing!!!
Nick Marino
March 19, 2009 at 11:56 am
OKAY i redid my final four based on appropriate criteria (a.k.a. who is most awesome... or rather, the awesomest:
Final Four
She-Hulk vs. Iron Man
Storm vs. The Joker
...and.... STORM wins!!!!

March 19, 2009 at 12:00 pm
This is coolio.
Some great first round matchups: Kitty vs Jean in a battle for mutant hearts and minds! Vic Sage vs Frank Castle in black and white! If anyone can upset a top seed, it's got to be Sgt Fury!
Some interesting potential second round matchups loom, especially in Region 3 where we could have archer vs archer, and maybe the rematch Barbara Gordon's been asking for for years!
And the sweet sixteen could see some Flash on Flash action! If Walter Kovacs doesn't ride his resurgent internet wave to some upsets...
Should be fun to see where this goes. I'm pulling for Quasar.

My Final 4? Doc Doom, Superman, Thor and Hal Jordan
suedenim
March 19, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Lots of interesting matchups here, including a few pairs of frequent sparring partners (Dr. Doom/Namor, Captain America/Nick Fury).
The Ben Grimm/Barry Allen matchup will be one of the most difficult for me to pick personally. Barry was my first "Favorite Character" as a youth, but, as Bully demonstrates time and time again, Ben Grimm Rocks!
Neal K
March 19, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Hmmm.... I think the Final Four will be Batman, Superman, Hulk and GL (Hal Jordan). Winner will be Batman.
I think the guy with the strongest upset potential is Rorschach (unless we are completely Watchmen weary at this point), and I think Darkseid has a pretty good chance to pull off an upset or two coming from a 12 seed.
Personally, I think the weakest #1 seed is Captain America -- there is a fighting chance Fury will put him out of the tournament in Round 1.

Deadpool
Money's on Rorschach to take it.
(Though I did smile a cruel smile when I came to the Oracle/Joker matchup...)

OK, I've got a Final Four. I'm betting on the irrefutable and sustained awesomeness of Bully's "365 Days of Ben Grimm" making a big-time impression on the voters!
Final Four:
Batman vs. Ben Grimm
Spider-Man vs. The Joker
Then, in a match-up of former Team-Up Title Stars, Ben Grimm defeats Spider-Man for the championship!

Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 12:24 pm
By the way, for the record, I didn't mess with the order at all to make more interesting match-ups. This is just how the rankings ended up. I didn't even look at the match-ups myself until I had them all typed into the bracket.
It's just funny because there are some very intriguing possible ones, like Oracle/Joker, Wally/Barry and Hawkeye/Green Arrow, so it almost seems like I did them intentionally.
Greg Geren
March 19, 2009 at 12:25 pm
My predictions are Superman vs Batman & Spider-Man vs Hal Jordan, with Batman as the winner.
My personal picks had Kyle vs Thanos & Power Girl vs Hal, with Thanos as the ultimate winner. (Region 2 was hurtin' for my favorites, and most of those were against each other in the first round!)
And Billy beat Clint in both scenarios.

Darkseid

With either Deadpool or Darkseid for the win.

Just for clarification's sake, is that the DC/Vertigo version of Death, or Marvel's Death?
And for Captain America, should I assume that it's Steve Rogers, or are we going with the current Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider Cap?

My criteria was easy - whom would prompt me to pick up and read the comic. Final Four: Batman, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Captain America. The winner? Iron Fist.
Did yield some interesting matchups which boggled the mind: Doom vs. Batman, Joker vs. Deadpool, Nightwing vs Iron Fist.... All three of those would be amazing one-shots.

March 19, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Region One is tough..Logan, Bats and Doom all together and Darkseid as a 12 seed (ouch!)...wow...anyways, MY Final Four predictions: Batman, Barry Allen Flash as Cinderella, Daredevil & Hal Jordan. Bruce batters Barry in one semi-final while Matty Murdock knocks down a blind buzzer beaters to edge out the Lantern to make it to the final. But this is the Year of the Bat (there have been plenty) and Bruce Wayne makes Murdock's defense look prehistoric all the while trash talking lalalalalala for getting in his lane while he was trying to F'n score! BATMAN wins again!!!!
BUT...if we are staying all in character, didn't Firestorm play ball? I am not sure if Brucie had much competition at his prissy prep schools. AND Reed Richards, Elongated, Plastic Man would have quite an advantage here....just saying.
Doc Beechler
March 19, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Wolverine, Superman, Nick Fury, Swamp Thing
Swamp Thing wins

March 19, 2009 at 1:21 pm
That whole bracket thinger containing Superman is the problem one. I don't see how three of the final four can not be Batman, Spider-man, Joker (though those are my personal biases as well). Hmmmm... I think I'll vote for Superman in the final spot despite thinking Nightwing or Wally could be more popular at present. But don't make me choose between Bats and Spidey! AAARRRGGHHH! I'll say Batman wins it all because he won a deciding coin flip
Thok
March 19, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Hal Jordan
Winner: Batman
It's less useful to pick upsets in this format, since character strengths are less variable. I'm only picking Hal over Cap because I think his popularity has gone up some since that last poll was made. Of those picks, Superman is the one I'm most worried about (and his chief competition would be
Robert Downey JrIron Man).Brian Cronin
March 19, 2009 at 1:31 pm
You're absolutely right. I made a major boo-boo there. To fix it, I decided to replace Madrox with Surfer
Anakha
March 19, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Spider-Man was the only #1 seed that even made it past the round of 64 for me. Nova vs. Thanos, Oracle vs. Joker, Hawkeye vs. Green Arrow were some of my interesting matchups. In the end it went down to:
Final Four
Region 1: Firestorm (yep, that's right!)
Region 2: Magneto
Region 3: Deadpool
Region 4: Thanos
Winner: Deadpool over Firestorm
Anakha
March 19, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Replacing Madrox with Silver Surfer made Deadpool vs. Silver Surfer tough... but mine still stayed the same. But having those two together is like having Louisville and Pitt in the same region.

This is a really really fun idea. Although, since we're not the NCAA, it might be cooler to give us 48 hours to vote each time, instead of 24. Flexibility in a busy world is a very valuable asset!
Meanwhile, I'm not even going to bother predicting a final four ... it seems like it the Final Four should be comprised of some no-brainer choices (from, say, six top characters) ... but then again, the possible upsets (like Oracle over Joker! that'd rock) are what makes a tourney worthwhile, after all. But it makes my sleep-deprived head hurt, right now, to try to predict them.
It will sooo be interesting to see if some characters have risen or fallen in popularity (Rorschach, Batman, Wolverine) since the awesome poll that inspired the seedings. And, @ Mudassir: I agree about my man Sinestro. He was in my Top Ten back when we voted. I bet he'll place a lot higher if (when?) Brian ever does the poll again.

At first, I reasoned it all out based on logic and coherence... which lead to a final four of Batman, Death, J'Onn and the Silver Surfer, with Death trouncing Batman in the final fight... but ONLY because it's Death of the Endless.
Then I decided to go with my personal biases and the final four I'd like to see:
Booster Gold vs Kitty Pryde, and Animal Man vs Hawkeye, leading into the Kitty Pryde vs Hawkeye fight, and emerging with a Hawkeye victory over all.
Notably, either way sees Spider Jerusalem getting as far as the final eight.

My personal top four would be:
Dr Strange (Lee style)
Iron Fist
Nick Fury
Daredevil
Yeah, I'm a Marvel Zombie. For me, the win would go to Daredevil, for sure.
To pick for the prize, I'll say:
Batman (because he's the business for everyone)
Spider-Man (because he's the Marvel business)
The Joker (because he does rock pretty hard)
and

I think all the number one seeds are going to make it into the final four, with the winner being Batman. Although I think that Doom, Joker, and Death all have potential for some upsets.

I like that you said the Joker will win Scotty360 even though I think you're wrong.
I would also like to revise my predictions and say Spider-man instead of Wonder Woman, but I still think Batman will win it all. So:
Batman
Superman
Oracle
Spider-man
Batman wins it all

Darkseid is a 12 seed? Silver Surfer is an 8?

Well observed.
The seedings all come directly from how they were ranked in the Top DC/Marvel Characters Poll from late 2007.

And I apologize in advance if you were just curious where those characters would be if this were a DC/Marvel/Image/Dark Horse tournament. Lost my impulse control for a few seconds.

I used some rules to winnow to the final four like "highest last letter of the superhero name" and "lowest first vowel of the real name", deciding ties by coin flips. Different rule each round.
Final Four: Wolverine, Daredevil, Nova, and Oracle.
Decided the rest by coin flips.
Winner: Wolverine (James Howlett)
He really is the best there is at what he does, I guess.

Again, our personal preferences for who our favorite characters are :
My Final Four from this set up are Dr. Doom, Iron Man, Daredevil and Green Arrow with Dr. Doom being my favorite.
Tough calls included Batman - She-Hulk, Superman - Iron Man, Thing - Beast, Thing - Iron Man, Dr. Doom - Batman, Spider-Man - Thor, Guy Gardner - Thor, Lex Luthor - Daredevil, Joker - Aquaman, Green Arrow - Nick Fury
I wish Marvel & DC would get back to doing crossovers with each other. Those were great.

Watch for DC/Marvel Character Tourney Region X, Round Y posts. You go to them to vote for the match-ups.
Sorry to say it, but Magneto dispatched Animal Man in the first round
