C'mon, Strange, you can do it...

I have to ask: it seems to me that, anecdotally, Wolverine is either the most popular character of the last 3 decades or so or second only to Batman. So why was his previous popularity such that he is only a 3 seed? Is it a case of favorability and unfavorability being both so high that they nearly cancel each other out? Or is my more general-population knowledge not reflective of the kind of people who (like me) visit comicbookresources? Any thoughts?

OMFG, Doc Strange is WINNING?!? We truly live in an age of wonders.

I'm pulling for him, but I don't see how Stephen pulls this one out in the long haul.

Like Darkseid, he's someone that you probably wouldn't like enough to put on your list when asked to name your 10 favorite characters, but if you're given the option of him and another random character, you'll often go with him (only, of course, Wolverine would be on many more lists than Darkseid, hence Wolverine being a #3 seed and Darkseid a #12 seed).

Brian, if that's true, then why does he star in every single book ever published by marvel comics? And his face is everywhere...walk down the street in a large enough area for a little while and you're probably going to see Wolverine on some kind of a T-Shirt. I'm just not seeing that for, say, the more highly ranked Dr. Doom.

Again, I wonder if this is just an audience problem - I'm not much of a marvel comics reader and I'm not sure I could even pick Dr. Doom out of a lineup. Wolverine, on the other hand, probably has name/face/costume recognition on par with anyone besides Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man.

Possibly your answer is telling me that while he is universally beloved, that love is rather shallow - everyone likes him but no one puts him in the top 10. I'm also still entertaining the hypotheses that he's much less beloved in the comics community than the general public, or that his overexposure means that, while I would still think he's more popular than, say, Captain America, he's also much more disliked. Any of this making sense?

seems to be a missing poll here Batman- Rayner GL

There's a lot of Wolverine backlash, just because he's so overexposed.

That's been true for a long time -- the whole idea of Lobo was to make fun of the popularity of Wolverine and similar hyper-badass characters, and the irony was that the fanboys ate him up in exactly the same way.

nevermind, reloaded and there it is

CONSTANTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont understand how John constantine is losing to Doom.

Wow, Strange Vs. Wolvie is way closer then I expected... Go Strange!

My choices are (currently) doing a lot better here. Two pretty easy wins, a loss I don't care about (I prefer JC over Doom, but they're both in my top ten), and one that's too close to call (go Doc Strange!).

It's strictly demographics, G - the average comic reader is a lot more forgiving of Wolverine than the readers of this blog (for whom I think "grudging acceptance" would be about the most positive emotion you'd be able to summon).

It's not like Batman who, while popular in the mainstream, may be MORE popular on a relatively specialised blog like this one.

Much as I love GL Kyle, I can't vote against Batman.

Incredible that Dr Strange leads Wolverine, but gee it's close!

I also wouldn't have predicted Darkseid to beat Cyclops or Doom to beat Constantine (though that's how I voted), yet at this stage both lead.

Batman and Crabface Guy? What's the record for most lopsided result?

There’s a lot of Wolverine backlash, just because he’s so overexposed.

Well ... Wolverine is the best at what he does.

Sadly, what he does has becoming kinda boring.

sorry that should read
"...what he does is becoming kinda boring"

Seriously, guys... if Strange wins, I'll buy everyone a pony.

Really.

~P~

My votes are...

Batman

Cyclops

Doctor Strange

Doctor Doom

you shoulda put MAGNETO up against DOCTOR DOOM. come on, J. Constantine? how can one such as he compete against...DOOOOOOOOOOM!

I'm surprised Constantine is getting scraped so hard.

Just voted for Strange and it's a dead heat at 366 votes each.

Come on Stephen, get it done!

Jeez, Batman against Kyle is just a trouncing in the works.

I'm getting really, unnecessarily excited by this

I just cast the winning vote for Dr. Strange. We'll see if it lasts the hour.

Love the X-Men as I do (probably because I don't read it), what does Wolverine have which compares with the sheer majesty that is early Strange by Ditko?

Yes! I just voted for Strange and put him one vote ahead. This puts him in the lead according to the Grimm rule. The eye of agamotto is on it.

The ones I voted for are all in the lead on this one.

Hey, it's 24 hours + some minutes now. Give it to Dr. Strange, he's ahead!

It hasn't been 24 hours yet.

There is still an hour and 25 minutes left.

[...] go here to vote or just go there to view the progress as time runs [...]

Tick, Tick, Tick

Yay! For the Master of the Mystic Arts!

Please let him win.

I hate Wolverine sooooooooooooooo much this would really make my day a lot more than I'd like to admit..........

Who'd have thought Dr Strage would have a chance against Wolverine?

The snobbish power of the internet triumphs over undeniable populism again! Not like I can't wear a "Don't blame me. I voted for Wolvie" pin, beacuse, you know, I didn't.

It probably helped Dr Strange that he is so blah. Meant everyone who hated Wolverine could vote for him with a clear conscience.

I want my pony.

That was more exciting than any of the actual NCAA games ...
