Solicitation Consternation

Let’s take a quick statistical look at Marvel Comics’ June solicitations, shall we? I’m going just from the covers and ad copy here for the “definites,” and my own personal assumptions about an issue’s cast for the “maybes.”

Wolverine count: 19 definites, 3 maybes
Dark Wolverine count: 2 definites, 3 maybes
Skrullverine count: 2-in-1 (Skrull Kill Krew)
Alternate Future-y Wolverine count: 1 (Fantastic Force)
Rocket Raccoon count: 1

Dear Marvel,

Clearly, something has gone terribly wrong.

So a down month for Wolverine appearances then?

I’m starting to look back on the days in the 80′s when Wolvie was my favorite character with a bit of sadness.

Make Mine Marvelrine! later!

Well okay, I’ve BEEN looking back on those days with sadness for some time now.

The solicitation for Wolverine Magazine has to be one of the most unintentional funny solicitations of all time, especially when you realize the next 5 solicitations after that also contain Wolverine.

Is this a clear admission that the Marvel Universe is dead? All we have is a host of “what if” stories.

I’d say the absurdity of this reflects mainly the idiot fans who buy the crap, doesn’t it?

I guess that’s understood, but I’m feeling even more curmudgeonly than usual & wanted to say it anyway.

Wolverine Magazine has a great solicitation, considering it’s #2 and the copy dictates it’s the first issue.

I’m the best at what I do and what I do ain’t pretty, but its what I do and what I do best is appear in multiple comics across numerous continents every month while wearing an eye-patch as a disguise that would make Clark Kent blush and if I didn’t do this I don’t know what I’d be best at……bub! ;-)

Jeez, and I was starting to get riled up over the fact that DC was going to put out eight different Batman stories in June. Are the Big Two really that starved for ideas? I understand superhero comics are their bread and butter, but come on; do we really need that many Wolverine comics at all?

Where’s Rocket Raccoon Art Appreciation Month??

It is Wolverine overload – even moreso than usual – but the timing makes a little more sense. The Wolverine movie comes out in May (check the May solicits and you’ll see it’s pretty heavily Loganed up, too), so I’d imagine it’s Marvel’s attempt to make sure there’s readily available product if people wander from the theater to the comics store anytime in those two months.

It happened with Iron Man and Hulk last year, after all. The only difference is this year they’re boosting the presence of an already popular character.

My dreams have been realized!!! Does this include TPBs, or reissued GNs???

No, I didn’t even count collections. That would probably raise the numbers by 33-50%, I’m just assuming.

You see? Further proof on my Lobo/Wolverine Clone Theory…

When Dox “Neutered” Lobo’s replication ability, itdimension-hopped into Wolverine…

Every time a big enough piece of Wolverine gets cut off, it grows into a NEW Wolverine…

There are HUNDREDS of Wolverine’s running around… THey just have big get-togethers every month or two to drink beer, play poker and catch up with what they’ve all been doing (to kkep stores straight with their respective teams/team-ups/etc…)

“Because the fans demanded it…”

Wolverine versus Rocket Racoon!

Manglr…

Only if Rocket Racoon wins and Wolverine is never seen again for at least 10 years.

You’d think Marvel would have revealed that some of the multiple Wolverines in the last 5 years was a Skrull. Skrullverine could have been, like, Wolverine’s Ben Reilly.

Um, it’s just comic books guys. If you didn’t like over the top superhero stuff you can just go pull out your copy of Blankets and weep. Wolverine’s a cool character and a lot of people like to write his stories, and a lot of people like to read them. Welcome to the comic book industry, clearly this is your first time here, otherwise you would’ve realized this a long time ago.

And this isn’t directed at Bill Reed who is just lamenting the lack of Rocket Racoon. I get that. But for all of you who are upset that there’s a lot of books with Wolverine in them…

Wolverine’s not really that cool of a character, though. He’s actually pretty boring.

Why do you say that, Dan?

“while wearing an eye-patch as a disguise that would make Clark Kent blush”

Oh this was covered years ago…I believe it was Jessica Drew who said that if a guy with 6, foot long claws wants to pretend to be someone else…you let him.

That’s crazy enough that it must be true. Wasn’t it established once that he could regenerate from very little tissue? But I don’t think they’d meet up to play cards. Think of the identity crisis. I think they’d hunt each other down, like in Highlander, to prove who is the TRUE Wolverine.

Except the first time Wolvie was decapitated that just made yet another Wolvie… on second thoughts maybe that explains why he plays cards. It’s far more serious than it seems. Winner takes all.

Whatever happened to the 2nd part of Gaiman’s “Whatever happened to the Caped Crusader”, Detective Comics # 853?

Did that EVER come out?

Can anyone confirm?

@ Tom
it comes out april 15th.

How can you say that, Apodaca? He’s short & he has claws! And long sideburns! And … and … yeah! Really long claws!

Woooooo!

Next year: House of Dark Secret Wolverine War Disassembled!

You all just wait until the Rocket Raccoon movie comes out…

Does anyone actually pull out their copy of Blankets and weep about all the Wolverine? Is that a thing?

Apparently it was pushed back yet again, Tom.

Me, I’m still waiting on the last issue of Ambush Bug.

Brad, my copy of Blankets is so stained with Wolverine tears that it’s unreadable. I mean, all the ink just ran, and it ran into the shape of a tiny hairy Canadian dressed like a gay luchador.

Not saying that Wolverine’s not a bad character- he’s pretty cool- but why does Marvel feel the need to oversaturate the market with these comics? Who else besides the collectors are actually going to go out and buy every single one of these issues?

And calling it an industry… that’s my biggest issue right there: that it’s an industry. Instead of treating comics like art, they’re treated like something made in an assembly line. Hell, with pencilers, inkers, letterers and colorists, it might as well be an assembly line. Clearly these guys have talent- lots of it- which only makes it a shame that they’re not put to better use. I’m not saying we can’t ever have any more Wolverine comics; I’d just like to see some more variety.

And don’t you be dissing on Blankets; it’s a damn good book.

Ah the internet, where you can complain about anything you want but at the risk of someone complaining about your complaints. It’s almost more metatexual than a Morrison comic.

Fantastic Force is a strong enough brand that they are brining it back?

Something IS wrong.

A company that wants to make money!? OUTRAGEOUS!!!

If I were a retailer I would hate this, as a fan I don’t really care. If I were someone just coming off the street, having lots of options would be great.

Only one i’m psyched for is the Jason Aaron/Ron Garney Wolverine, Get Mystique rocked i cannot wait to see what a writer that i think is on par with Azzarello in terms of grittiness can do with Wolverine when given free reign.

What’s the DC count, any given month, for Batman/Batmen?

Hm, let’s see here:

- Batman & Robin
- (Unqualified) Batman (Side note: “In this special epilogue to BATTLE FOR THE COWL, new BATMAN writer Judd Winick rejoins the Bat Family!” OH GOD NOT AGAIN)
- Tec
- I’ll count streets of Gotham but not Red Robin. Nor Gotham City Sirens, which doesn’t mention Batman anywhere in the solicit.
- Confidential
- Supes / Bats
- Booster Gold guest appearance
- Batman: Brave & The Bold
- Super Friends

So, 9 not counting TPBs. That actually seems quite reasonable, especially since the last two are kids’ books (I couldn’t figure out if Wolverine appears in the Marvel Adventures line). I suppose there’s always a chance that Batman’s boots could show up in Tiny Titans, but no obvious hints there.

This was also a bit of a weird month, with a lot of FC-related miniseries but nothing else in that department.

Hey, at least I can take comfort knowing June’s got ‘Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter’.

That’s all I need, baby!

@Brian: Simple capitalism. The market will sell what the market can support. The market can support a shit-load of Wolverine. Plus, a lot of those are guest appearances which could help out other books.

Stephen –

>> (I couldn’t figure out if Wolverine appears in the Marvel Adventures line).

He’s a member of the line’s Avengers lineup. That’s the only MA title I buy, so I can’t speak to whether he ever shows up in any of the others.

[...] in the Savage Land! Of course, that was back when Marvel was just cranking out Wolverine comics. They’re so much more restrained these days, like they don’t want to overexpose the character or something. It’s like they’re [...]

As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m getting the non-continuity-driven one-shots, First Class, and… well, that’s it really. I get some Logan in alternate-continuity books (upcoming X-Men Forever, Marvel Adventures Avengers, etc.) but since I avoid the ghastly mainstream present-day 616 stuff (including the retcons they’ve foisted on him the last 5 years) I’m not getting too much Wolverine at all, plus that means I get no Romulus as well. :) I don’t like the way he’s been written by Aaron, Bendis, Millar, Way, etc. (they might be great people, or even good writers when they’re not tearing Marvel super-heroes to pieces, I just don’t like their comics writing) so that cuts a lot of his appearances out for me. (Along with a lot of other characters these days…)
