Well, I mentioned it in the latest strip, but I guess the creators of this comic didn’t see it. It has been a running joke for some time now that the White Lantern would be the apathy corps. People even came up with a symbol and an oath for them.

In brightest day, in blackest night,
Not my problem, I’ll be alright;
No cause you name is worth a fight,
Though if I’m bored, then yeah, I might.

Love the punchline. While I generally enjoy Johns work, when I heard about moodring lanterns for a year plus in GL (a title I don’t actually read, to be fair), I had to wonder what in the holy hell he was thinking. It’s a strong enough concept to carry a two parter maybe, but a whole event? Then again, this is what Marvel does every six months (the exact frequency with which Bendis comes up with new ideas) and those comics always sell phenomenally, so I guess it’s a pretty beneficent thing, in terms of sales for DC, mimicking the (vapid, imo) Marvel model.

Only problem I have is that it’s a good story and I’m entertained by it, but whatever.

Thing is….I’m positive Hal is heading toward being the ‘White Lantern’ as part of the resolution of the Blackest Might story…he’s now had green, yellow, blue and red…and theupcoming cover indicates he’ll have orange as well…
It’ll probably be the Lantern of Life standing against the dead lanterns or somesuch…

Yeah, I’m actually finding the current story pretty entertaining, too. But these strips have still been funny. Good job.

The end was quite awesome. I look forward to these each week.

Matt,
Yes we read your post last time. We did this a little while ago. We knew that the idea of a “bored” Lantern was a common fan joke (though I didn’t know of the one you linked). We decided to do our own take on it.
Though I do agree with snarker that white is probably not the best choice for an Apathy Lantern. It is the sum of all colors and will most likely come into play in stopping the Black Lanterns as “the sum of all emotions”.

Hilarious. I’ve enjoyed GL so far but I couldn’t help but laugh.

On the one hand, count me among the voices that feel that the current GL storyline had been surprisingly strong (the story is more than just “different colored rings” – really, you can make any story seem silly if you reduce the plot to the absolute minimal description: “we really promise this is the last Crisis,” “fluffy animals in battle armor,” “Magneto’s back, and this time he’s on drugs!” etc. (by the way, I wasn’t picking on Morrison, just using stories that are generally considered good)).
On the other hand, I thought the punchline was very good.

You don’t have to hate something to be able to poke fun at it’s flaws – I love me some Johns GL, but I can still see the funny side to ‘Oh look out, here comes Aqua-Lantern, and he brings word of the mysterious Cyan Lantern!’
Is it funnier hen people say they love something that they’ve never read, or when they hate something they’ve never read?

Well, the “Event” status of Blackest Night has more to do with editorial than Geoff Johns. It was envisioned as a Green Lantern story, but since Sinestro Corps was received so much better than Countdown and Amazons Attack, Didio decided to make it a DC event.
