There were parts that I loved about HB2, though, especially the male bonding between Abe and HB. Also, I'm not a Campbell-phile on Bill's level, but I thought Bubba Ho Tep was great, while we're sort of on that subject.

I just watched Punisher: War Zone this past week, when it came out on DVD, and I have to back up those who are calling in the worst movie of the year. The action was just silly most of the time (seriously? Dangling upside down from the chandelier firing randomly to kill everyone? Really? Didn't that seem stupid when it was done in _Boondock Saints_?) and it was coasting on how violently gory it was the rest of the time. I don't mind violent bloody movies. I just mind it when the hero acts stupidly or unrealistically in them, and that's how the Punisher acted. There was little of the violent inventiveness that Ennis brought to the character.

The Eye-tie villains were worse than a cliche. The CRAZY guy was stupid. And the ending sorta-Mexican standoff was incoherent. About the only thing that the movie had going to it was that it didn't try to turn Wayne Knight into misguided comic relief.

I met Bruce at a book signing of If Chins Could Kill/screening of Bubba Ho-Tep a few years back. He's just a totally awesome guy in person. I didn't have the heart to tell him the Autolycus he signed for me was bought out of a $2 bin at Toys R Us.

Another vote for HB1 over 2. 2 looked great, but I found the story poor, and a lot of the characterization..the whole "we hate being with the BRD" worse.

I actually liked Hellboy 1 way more than 2; something about 2 just didn't click for me. I got it for Christmas, so I'm going to watch it again someday and see if it still underwhelms me. To be fair, Pan's Labyrinth didn't fry my burger, either.

Dave said:

But if you ever enjoyed Predator, Commando, Rambo, Robocop, or any other unapologetically R-rated action movies, you basically owe it to yourself to watch Punisher.

Haha! I love all those movies, so Punisher was right up my alley, yes. It was nice to be pleasantly surprised for once. I went into Quantum of Solace expecting greatness and was disappointed; I went into Punisher expecting glorious suck and found myself enjoying it far more than I'd anticipated. So that's why, yes, Punisher works better than the latest Bond. I know, I'm crazy.

I really liked Tom Jane as Frank Castle, and outside of Travolta's perfomance, I thought it was a great movie; I remember reading that they wanted to PG-13-ify the next movie, and that's why Jane didn't want to be involved any longer. Ever since, my interest in the followup has been nonexistent, but after reading the above I may have to finally check this movie out.

I have really dug the Hellboy movies, though, and My Name Is Bruce has a lot of laughs. Fun films, all of them.

Punisher War Zone was the best pure action movie since Rambo, so if you don't like it, I'm pretty sure you're just watching the wrong genre entirely.

Watching War Zone back to back with Quantum of Solace just confirmed this. Both movies are action/revenge movies, but Punisher War Zone was savaged by the critics while Quantum of Solace was one of the biggest hits of last year. However, after leaving the theater, the only thing I could think about was that I was amazed by how completely bad QoS was. The action scenes were an incoherent hodgepodge of quick cuts trying to emulate the Bourne movies while forgetting how to choreograph a fight so that anyone could follow the action, whereas War Zone had exceedingly well-done, straightforward fight scenes that prove that you don't need to jerk the camera around like a spastic to make a "visceral" action scene. Not to mention that Frank Castle wins his battles based on his own skill, whereas by my recollection, the only reason Bond even survived the final fight scene with Dominic Greene was because Greene was somehow stupid enough to accidentally chop his own foot in half with a fire axe while trying to hit Bond.

Yeah, half the performances in War Zone were hammier than a Christmas dinner, but guess what? That made the movie FUN. After something as dour and joyless as QoS, watching West and Hutchinson chew the scenery was exactly what I needed to see.

I guess if your idea of a good action movie is some neutered PG-13 parkour festival with jerky camera, yeah, you're gonna hate War Zone. But if you ever enjoyed Predator, Commando, Rambo, Robocop, or any other unapologetically R-rated action movies, you basically owe it to yourself to watch Punisher.

Also Bill, you didn't miss much with Netflix, I'm pretty sure the second disc is just a digital copy of the film for your iPod or computer.

You give Punisher: War Zone way too much credit.

It is bad. Awful, in fact. If I can encourage even one person to NOT see this movie who otherwise might have, my efforts have not been in vain.

I thought Hellboy II was bad. It was pretty, but it was awfully uninteresting. It lost me at the very first scene--a 'super bad-ass' solo martial arts exhibition by a fairy dude on wires with no score for six minutes. It's bad news if a movie starts with derisive laughter and boredom.

My Name is Bruce is a fine choice...was lucky enough to see Bruce in person in Boston.

If you're looking for an odd out of the way DVD for Nerds reference....look for the movie 'Special' which just hit the shelves this week. It's about a guy who gains superpowers in a clinical trial. Or perhaps a guy who has a psychotic episode about gaining super powers while in a clinical trial.

I love Bruce Campbell and I loved MNiB. I didn't get to go to a screening of it that he attended, but years ago I went to an Evil Dead screening that he did a Q&A at, and it was one of the most entertaining events I've ever been to. The guy is pretty damn witty. I'm still proud of the one line response email I got from him years ago, and the signed copy of "If Chins Could Kill" that an ex got me, where he makes fun of me for not being there in person despite the signing taking place in NYC and me living in Minneapolis. Bruce rules.

Why does the Punisher have an alien skull painted on his chest? Does he hunt down and kill little gray aliens in the movie? If not, maybe he put that on there to lull the bad guys into a false sense of security: "Uh-oh, guys, there's a guy coming with a skull painted on his chest-- no, wait, it's an alien skull, he must just be some UFO nut, we'll be fine--ARGH! Oh holy hell!"

I'm with you Bill. Bruce is the king! I went to a MNiB Q&A screening in NY a few months ago. He gave me $5.

Needless to say, it was the finest moment of my movie going life.

Also, Punisher was perfectly fine for what it was supposed to be, but the scene where Dom. West is doing the Vince McMahon power walk around the Lower East Side was priceless.

Hellboy 2 was just Del Torro's audition for the Hobbit.
