A Year of Cool Comic Book Moments – Day 103
Here is the latest cool comic book moment in our year-long look at one cool comic book moment a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
Today we look at a great scene from the second Hellboy mini-series, where Hellboy makes quite an introduction upon some Nazis due to an amusing malfunction.
Enjoy!
Mike Mignola is a really great artist.
His Hellboy series are usually filled with dramatic giant panels that are overflowing with dynamism.
This series of pages from early in the Hellboy mini-series, Wake the Devil, is a great example of the power of Mignola the artist (and the dark humor of Mignola the writer).
Hellboy is on a mission against some Nazis. He is given a jetpack.
Things don’t go the way they were planned, so his entrance against the Nazis is a lot more…fiery than he intended (these pages are the last few pages, including the cliffhanger, of the first issue of the series)
Bad news for Hellboy, good news for people who like to look at cool stuff…

I guess “the” moment is when he crashes through the roof, but that shot of him free-falling trying to get the rocket going is great, too.

Any chance of seeing any Marvel UK Transformers output cropping up over the course of the next year Brian? Probably just wishful thinking…but I can remember several moments that blew my 8 year old mind!

That particular second Hellboy mini-series sure had a terrific follow-up in Darkness Calls.
Where everything that went wrong, did.
In a very bad apocalypsic way.

it should also be considered all the trouble Hellboy goes through with the rocket pack adds on to the moment and makes it worthy of the list but mostly him crashing through the ceiling and also being in free fall trying to ignite proves why this should be on the list

For my money, it has always been the “New and improved my, ass.” panel/page. The crash panel is cooler and more dramatic, but HB’s personality has always been the draw for me.

That is a great moment. The page of free-fall cracks me up.

So cool!
BTW, is that Mike Mignola drawing himself as the pilot? Or am I just imagining it?
