This Place Is Good – Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store

I don’t know if I’ve ever talked about this place before, but my pal Eric dropped me a line thinking it might be worth a mention on the blog, and it’s funny, because our own Joe Rice volunteers here frequently during the summer months when he is not corrupting our fair city’s youth in the classroom.

In any event, here‘s a neat write-up on the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store.

I need to go there the next time I’m in New York.

Newsweek did a bit on them a few years back, and then I heard them do a story on it on NPR.

There is the link for the NPR story. You can listen to the story after hearing a short ad, or just read it.

The store, of course, is a mere front for something more insidious – a K-12 writing nonprofit founded by author Dave Eggers (who wrote A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius). I haven’t visited the Brooklyn store, but the Pirate Supply Store in the original nonprofit (826 Valencia, in San Francisco) is great fun. I liked AHWoSG quite a lot, but my respect for Eggers skyrocketed when I found out what he was doing with his money and fame. It’s a great program.
