Justin, I’m pretty sure everyone follows that exact train of thought exactly. Especially that last part, about a lack of sign, like a “Oh hey, I’d totally come hang out with you and watch Ghostbusters 2, but I’m kinda sorta dating some guy that’s my best friend since first grade who just kinda decided to go for it last month” necklace or something.

I’ve never commented on these comics, but this is my favorite one so far. Really universal. I know I’ve been there, though not neccessarily at a comics shop. Mostly when I was single in college:

“Should I talk to that girl? This class isn’t a requirement, so theoretically we both have an interest in Shakespeare at least.”
“No, if she’s taking a Shakespeare class, it’s because she wants to read Shakespeare, not get hit on by English majors.”
“But what if she does, though? Isn’t socialization and trying to form meaningful relationships a part of college?”
“But if she’s just here for that, do I even want to be around somebody like that?”
“Good God, I hope *I’m* not here just for that. Am I being shallow?”
“Also, how do I know she’s single? This would be easier if there was something like a wedding ring, but for dating. Like a bracelet or earrings that would say, ‘I’m sort of dating a guy who works at Jimmy John’s.’”

And then class is over and it turns out I did not learn a bloody thing about 1 Henry IV.

Heh. I once sent my wife to a shop to pick up some books for me, and she said the customers kept falling over themselves. You’d think they’d have never seen a pretty girl outside the printed page.

It’s funny because it’s true. About 10 years ago there was a pretty woman working at a science fiction bookstore I occasionally went to and I went through the same kind of internal discussion in my head about asking her out. And I didn’t for pretty much the same reasons cited. Thankfully I didn’t verbalize such things out loud…
