Man, it uses the old "character of opposite gender I met as a kid and fell in love" cliche? And of course she forgot what he looks like or his name. People need notebooks or cameras to record such meetings so they don't have to deal with such hoary cliches.

Michelle -- yeah, I almost never think about it twice unless, you know, I have to *describe* it in a review. ;-)

And yes, it took a loooong time to get the Del Rey review copy situation figured out. Hope that gets straightened out soon for MR!

It's disturbing to me how normal everyone's large eyes look to me now. I remember at first I found it all very strange and now I just accept it without a qualm.

Also, I am so envious you're getting review copies from Del Rey. Manga Recon has had a devil of a time doing that since the change in editors.

hi Tom, my understanding is that back in the early days of manga influential artists like Osamu Tezuka were inspired by Disney (this could be a complete bullshit but Tezuka was certainly influenced by American cinema as a comic book artist).

Now many manga characters' eyes are a larger proportion of their face when they are *young* and characters' eyes are often depicted as getting smaller as they mature / age. But it depends upon the individual artist's style of course...

Y'know, I always wondered something about manga.

In almost every manga I've read, with the exception of mangas like Lone Wolf and Cub, MPD-Psycho, etc., why are characters eyeballs (or pupils) drawn so large? Is there some sort of rule that manga must be drawn this way?

Just something I wondered.
