I just bought the first Visionairies volume. The stories are great. The McFarlane art wasn't very good, but the stories kept me interested. I will certainly buy the next volume.

It's things like Mr. Fixit that make reading monthly comics so much fun. This was a major league curve ball. The gang at the comic book store were talking about it all month, just itching to know what the hell was going on.

Every time I get all pissed off when a writer TOTALLY RUINS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, I think about all the things David did with the Hulk. Mr. Fixit was as close as we've seen to the primordial Lee/Kirby Hulk, but then he gave us Hulks we'd never really seen before. And they all worked.

As much fun as the big, green bean-eating Hulk was, and as much as I imprinted on that version, I love the idea of the Hulk being an ever-evolving psychosis. And that really started here.

This was my favorite Hulk run ever.
The run preceding it was great.
I really enjoyed the search for the gamma bombs--some good stuff along the way--but when Mr Fixit shows up--well it just turned into an even better book.
I gave up the series after a few issues of that group he joined after this arc was completed--I couldn't get into it.

But Mr Fixit is something I like to re-read.
Good stuff.

Jbird: Are you telling me how to arrange my scans????? The Hulk versus Madman one is there because I was writing about issue #367, while the one with the Hulk transforming seemed a good example of Purves's art once Severin started inking him. I know I mention Keown and the way he draws the Hulk in that paragraph, but as I had already shown it, I figured something else was in order.

Jeff Purves was a very good Hulk artist. I remember an interview Peter David gave many years ago, in which he talked about how Purves wanted to draw fantasy-based material. He ended up becoming an animator at Disney.

I really liked the werewolf issue. It was my first non-Keown Hulk from this era, bought based on the Kevin Nowlan cover. I liked how I got all the character relationships even though I wasn't familiar with the Las Vegas characters.

The David/ Keown Hulks were my gateway comics, so I'm looking forward to the next installment.

The pictures are a little jumbled up, aren't they? The Madman vs. Hulk picture should be two paragraphs down, where we instead see Hulk transforming at sunrise.

PAD: I assume you're referring to Skaar and the Thundra/She-Hulk hybrid. However, you also implied a few years ago that Carmilla Black/The Scorpion is the Hulk's daughter. Your way of getting back at TPTB, or did you have other motives for that plot twist? (Personally, I love the twist, and hope if comes to fruition.)

I kind of assumed David objected to the miscarriage story, which is why he didn't write it, but I didn't want to go so far as to state that without confirmation. Why would he make Betty pregnant if he was just going to have her miscarry? It's kind of a shame we never got to see what David would do with the kid.

Cutting things off just shy of one of my favorite PAD Hulk issues, 369, vs. Freedom Force.

Wolverine #7-8 also made entertaining use of Joe Fixit, though it's obviously not part of the PAD run.

I had forgotten about that Hulk jr guy from the Deodato issues. Hey PAD, if you're still reading - was that intended to be basically the same character you planned? Or just a general "son of Hulk" character? Were thereany shades in that arc of the story you planned?

I read a lot of PAD Hulk back in the day, and this really takes me back. I may try to track down some of these back issues, as reading this really has me wanting to revisit the series. I would love to see Marvel put out a nice PAD Hulk Omnibus, but I doubt that would happen anytime soon.

IIRC, . It was mandated from up high, and PAD refused to write it.
He later did a Hulk novel that was somewhat the story he wanted to do about Betty having the baby..and said son of Hulk later showed up in some of the final bits of his run.

Just so you know, the reason I didn't write the miscarriage issue was because it was done over my objections. I had an entire storyline planned with the baby and Marvel higher ups informed me that, no, the baby had to die in utero because there was simply no way they would ever allow the Hulk to have any offspring. I refused to write it, so Harras did.

Considering he now has two, I find that amusing.

If I remember an old "But I Digress" column correctly, Bob Harras wrote the issue with Betty's miscarriage because the event was an editorial edict that Peter David was opposed to. So since the word from on high was that it was going to happen, David requested that someone else write the issue in question.

#346 was my last Hulk for a long long time...
I thought the twist at the beginning of 347 (that my brother picked up) was soooo lame!

I didn't buy Incredible Hulk again until The "Tempus Fugit" story a few years back...

I really thought 36 was the perfect send-off, and was expecting Rick Jones to become the New Hulk...
