T.: I can't think of any going bad "long term," but it's been done in numerous "Elseworlds" series and temporarily in superhero stuff for years. Even, say, Magneto reverting to a bad guy after Claremont worked hard to redeem him is an example. And, to be honest, after Miracleman (which doesn't really count as "going bad," does it?), is there much left to say on the subject?

I picked up Unthinkable yesterday and I really enjoyed it. Has a lot of potential to be a really great story, and the art is fantastic.

First up is The Unknown by Mark Waid and Minck Oosterveer, who’s an “international superstar,” according to Boom!’s web site. I had no interest in Waid’s other recent offering, Irredeemable, because “superhero goes bad” is not something I can see going differently than every other time it’s been tried, but The Unknown is a detective story, and detective stories can go any which way, and if they’re by good writers (which Waid is), they can be endlessly fun.

What are some stories where a superhero has gone bad long term with no use of mind control? I'm guessing Miracleman was one. What are the others you can think of? I've never read any books with the premise before so I'm interested in checking some out.

I assume these are $3.99 like most Boom offerings? If so, I've got to pass on 22 pages of table setting.

The pacing on both bothered me as well. As I said in my review of Unknown, the actual comic wasn't as interesting as hearing Waid himself talk about the series -- although Waid has always been a writer whose actual work I've found less interesting than his interviews and discussions of comics.

I think they both suffer as single issues, yes, because they take an entire 22 or so pages to set up the premise which is revealed in pre-release interviews on on the back of the eventual trade collection. There's not enough of the new to really entice me further.

Unknown was still fun, I guess. Unthinkable a bit less so. They could be interesting when they exist in toto.

Now I'm wondering how the third Un, The Unwritten, will fare this week.
