The Ugly American

2006 the brunette was undergoing her fat phase.

I love the pacing change at the end. Good work!

Haha…I love this comic strip so much.

Funny, but as usual I think it went one panel too long.

Really T.? Why?

I think the panel at the end makes the comic. It serves to show the actual breaking point, it provides an extra beat before the tension is released, and it shows the character acting along with the narration to further the story.

The four panels preceding are compositionally static, while the fifth one provides a contrast. The focus moves from the redhead to the brunette, allowing us to better see both personalities. The brunette recognizes her lot in life and exhibits frustration in an unexpected way, while the redhead is confused about the reaction–she is wrapped up in herself to the point of not noticing big changes in an old friend.

I think the fifth panel helps the timing and characterization, helping to make the joke much stronger.

(Also, I need to learn their names!)

i agree with T. “accepts her fate” would have been a better, subtler, punchline.
still pretty funny though.
thanks for these guys. i’m loving watching you guys hone (sp?) your craft.

Hey T, just a thought here….

Why don’t you just stop reading the last panel?

The last panel IS the joke, otherwise it’s just some character build-up.

There was a joke?

Remaining pedestrian …

Geez, sorry for offering constructive criticism.

My problem with the last panel is that it contradicts the second to last panel. The second to last panel says “accepts her fate,” then gets immediately followed by a panel where she screams “DAMMIT!!” like she’s reached her breaking point, which is the opposite of accepting her fate. Why would she be screaming “DAMMIT!” if she had just finished accepting her fate. To me to improve this strip, it would have been better to take out the last panel altogether, or keep the last panel but take out the “accepts her face” in the previous panel. But it’s still pretty funny.

That makes some sense; it might be better with different phrasing. I took “accepts her fate” as more resignation of her situation than approval. You can accept your fate without liking it. I’m sure I’ve yelled “DAMMIT!!” about something I realized I wasn’t going to change.
