Well, I've never (or even seen, I think) Shojo Beat, but I've already gone to the website. I can't really blame Viz for putting their resources towards online stuff!

" Yeah, with you on the last part. As a primarilly-American-comics fan (still) ten bucks for well over a hunret pages STILL feels like a pretty spectacular deal. "

I'm hardly denying that American comic collections are overpriced, but the two come from different cultures with different ways of creating and producing comics, and comparing them on the basis of page count seems like apples and oranges. Manga may be much cheaper per page, but they're black-and-white pages on a smaller layout, and tend to have less plot-per-page than American comics ( by virtue of bigger panel layouts ).

There's a lot both have to learn from each other, especially the American comics industry, but I don't see them as like quantities when it comes to pricing.

I really enjoyed the first chapter of Children of the Sea. I'm looking forward to future installments.

As far as "Reader demand", I suspect they'll offer some form of polling as to what stories are more popular. They do that with mail-in slips for the print books to some extent, but this would be much easier and more convenient to do online.

Shojo Beat I might have been more inclined to have bought it if the colour schemes they used for the inks wasn't pink and blue and all that. It was a bit hard on my eyes when I looked at it in the store. But that said, I feel for those who read and enjoyed the mag.
