I hate “decompressed” comics as much as anyone. But my vast experience with police work (“Homicide,” “The Shield,” “Law & Order,” etc.) tells me that detectives often butter up a suspect before hitting him or her with the money question. This isn’t an excuse for the padding, especially if it’s boring, but it may explain what Andreyko was thinking.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Bill Macy with a goatee (which is why he didn’t register as an option), but, yeah, that could be him.

Whoever he is, he’s certainly a familiar face.

Gary Oldman! Thanks, Ian. I didn’t mention Hargitay and Goodman because I could not, for the life of me, figure out that it was Oldman. It was really bugging me. I kept looking at him and trying to figure out the actor. Total mental block.

I don’t think saying it works in the trade is a particularly good defense, paying $15-$20 for something that takes a half hour to read is no better than paying $3 for something that takes you 5 minutes to get through. ‘Decompression’ would be fine if comics weren’t a medium where you’re always paying by the page.

Tom, I’ll go a step further and say that I haven’t enjoyed Bendis at Marvel at all. That includes Daredevil. To be fair, I haven’t read Ultimate Spidey yet. However, his style seems like a bad fit with the Marvel Universe. Gerry Conway had the same problem when he went from Marvel to DC thirty years ago.

sigh. I miss those good ol’ days when Bendis was writing Sam and Twitch, or doing crime noir fiction like Torso. I dunno about anyone else, but it seems like Bendis lost his edge when he stopped writing Daredevil.

I do remember experiencing the same feeling as you when I purchased the singles on a month-to-month basis. 4 weeks would pass and I’d forget what happened in a previous issue.
Yes most of the arcs worked a lot better in a collected format read in one go.
Sam and Twitch was actually a nice little crime series. They travelled a lot of dark waters and the artists were always quality picks.
It seems like a million years ago since BM Bendis and Maleev handled these characters.
