This was an excellent series: Busiek and Pacheco work well together (see Avengers Forever), they created an interesting world quickly and Pacheco’s art has rarely been better. I hope the first commenter’s post on an illustrated prose novel is based on truth.

Pacheco is a great artist when he isn’t pulling a “Land Grab”

The “trace a photo” crap he’s doing in Iron Man (and many others) has to stop.

Sorry but… Pacheco does NOT draw Iron Man, Larroca does.

I was personally able to feel both wonder and horror at the appropriate moments without one getting in the way of the other.

Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket both also go out of their way to show that there is great beauty in war.

Sorry – the syntax of that sentence is a bit mangled.

I figured it was because you wrote it back in 05 – Hans Blix was a liar, John Kerry windsurfed and those WMD’s were just around the corner!

Actually, what I meant was that we don’t find the horror too disturbing, because it’s drawn so well. The death is quite literally beautiful, so it doesn’t have as much impact as it might if it were a bit less so. Sorry – the syntax of that sentence is a bit mangled.

When they’re couched in the form of people dying horribly, probably.

despite Busiek’s attempts to show that “war is hell,” we’re too amazed by the magical creatures and wonder at how he integrates them into a gritty narrative to be too disturbed by his anti-war sentiments.

You find anti-war sentiments disturbing?

Arrowsmith was absolutely fantastic. I keep hearing rumblings about a new Arrowsmith tale, but they never come to fruition. Last i heard, the next installment was going to be alternating pages of text and illustration. But that was a couple of years ago. Here’s to hoping we see something new soon.

This was a great series! Busiek, besides being one of THE BEST superhero writers out there, really understands what makes a great comic. And Pacheco’s artwork is fantastic! One of the books I always push on my comic reading friends.

This is great stuff!
I read it years ago and remember being pleasantly surprised at a fantasy story done well in comics(I hadn’t read Bone and Sandman yet)
Amazing art and Busiek is great as usual (I see Trinity as just a bump on the road on an otherwise excellent career)

It’s funny Greg, but now that you said that this was written years ago I can’t help but picture you then as a wide-eyed country boy arriving on the big city to make it in the cut-throat world of comics blogging How the times have changed

I loved it. There is a ray of hope. Supposedly, Busiek and Pacheco are working on “Arrowsmith: Far From the Fields We Know”, an illustrated prose novel that focuses on Fletcher Arrowsmith in a Prussian prison on a secret mission for the Allies. I really hope it does come out.
