Seaguy #2 was the best comic I've read this year (and I include #3), Blackpool's just a shitty holiday resort in Britain and maybe the Unwritten thing's a subtle meta-commentary on the extent to which the Harry Potter premise is itself such a shameless crib of so much that's gone before.

Well, I can tell you that having two English degrees isn't enough to catch all of Moore's references...

"You’ve disappointed me, comics readers. Not enough of you bought this series, and now it’s dead. Well, not enough of you Americans, anyway. One quote– and now I’ve lost where I read it, but no matter– seemed to indicate that it sold well enough in Britain, but not in America, and apparently it’s the American sales that really count. Profit is profit, isn’t it?"

Comments like these drive me batty. I appreciate that you're sad that a favorite title is ending. Nonetheless, I feel no obligation to buy a title when I'm just not interested, particularly when prices are going up and I'd prefer to subsidize my favorite books over someone else's. Or should I have not been reading Incredible Hercules while I left Captain Britain on the shelf?

Oh yeah, the surface stuff of the character is definitely very Harry Potter, but the Trumpet scene that opens the series feels like a pure callback to the ending of Stormbringer. But then again, given my enthusiasm for Moorcock and relative apathy towards the later Harry Potter stuff, I'm more tuned into that material anyway. Still, Ambrosio's plans to kill everything and unmake creation strike me as a good deal darker than anything Voldemort ever attempted.

If you have the chance, I'd recommend checking out Del Rey's recent Elric: The Stealer of Souls compilation, it's a relatively quick read and a pretty excellent introduction to the Elric mythos.

For the record, we share 5 titles in this months shipment–Captain Britain, Buffy, LOEG, Umbrella Academy and the Unwritten.

Probably not all; these 10 were just the ones I felt like talking about. But cheers, mate! At least somebody's at the same pace I am.

As much as I enjoy your comments in other posts, I rarely delve into your own posts for some reason.

Rectify!

I was wondering what it would take for me to drop this, and another Loeb issue would probably do it. Not really, as inertia is a powerful force, but I might read it in the shop before deciding to put money down.

I think he was just doing the one; I was retroactively complaining. But the Meltzer issues might make me harm myself and/or others, depending how those go.

Oh, and Cornell made the UK vs. US sales comment in a recent X-Position interview at the mother site.

Ahh. Now I feel dumb scouring every post at Robot 6 from the last four days.

To me, the Tommy Taylor stuff in The Unwritten definitely has the elements of Harry Potter pastiche, yes, but the scenes we were presented actually reminded me far more of Michael Moorcock’s Elric stories, especially Stormbringer.

Haven't read Elric. But a wizard kid with dark hair and glasses who has a magic mark that burns when his nemesis is around and whose mythos is followed by thousands of fanpeople? Quite Potter-y. And that's the second wizard kid with dark hair and glasses that's been at Vertigo. Not that I much care, as Unwritten was a good comic.

The brief scenes from Tommy Taylor and the Golden Trumpet and Tommy Taylor and the Rain of Salt had an kind of apocalyptic scope that Harry Potter never really managed to capture and was far more reminiscent of the destruction wreaked upon the world by the forces of Chaos in Stormbringer.

Ian A: If you haven't read it yet, I advise checking out the original "Fin Fang Four" one-shot first. I laughed hysterically at that one. Whereas "Fin Fang Four Return(!)" really felt like a letdown, to me.

As much as I enjoy your comments in other posts, I rarely delve into your own posts for some reason. But this time, you had me at "Time Lord". I'm so human sometimes, it's funny...

Yes, I’m buying it because I’ve basically committed myself to buying the whole thing, even the Loeb and Meltzer issues, purely out of my love of the show and my loyalty to Joss Whedon. Yes, I’m one of those people.

Hey, there's the line! I was wondering what it would take for me to drop this, and another Loeb issue would probably do it. Not really, as inertia is a powerful force, but I might read it in the shop before deciding to put money down.

As far as Doctor Who was concerned, I enjoyed it a bit without having seen any Tom Baker eps since my age was in the single digits. I will have to catch up with those on Netflix after I finish Star Trek: TOS.

And as always, CSBG makes me feel bad for not collecting Captain Britain, Umbrella Academy, LoEG and Seaguy. The economy isn't totally sunk in the upper Midwest, but we're not doing that great. Seriously, I'll buy the trades some day...

This was a fun read. 2 comments, though.

I thought the Blackpool reference in the Doctor Who book was a nod to the end of Revelation of the Daleks? I'm not very familiar with Tennant's other work, except the TV adaptation of Trollope's He Knew He Was Right.

And yes, not only does Moore get a lifetime free pass, but, you, me, and everyone else who bought 1910 is picking up the next one. For Damn Sure!

Cheers,

I must track down this Fin Fang Four Return! of which you speak, as that looks mighty fun.

Also: I always want to put a "G" at the end of "Fin" (making it "Fing Fang"), for whatever reason. Maybe I'm just addicted to alliteration.

And, I'm pretty sure Umbrella Academy has transcended its roots to become "cool people for cool people" by now. That last issue...wow. I was eating that up. Volume 3 can't arrive soon enough.

I received my first box from DCBS earlier this week. I was turned on to them by your out-of-date reviews / rants. I love the service and think it will ultimately save me money, not only because of the discounts but because I won't be going to my LCS as frequently--less impulse shopping.

Thanks for the introduction to the service and keep up the good work--I enjoy your out-of-date review / rants.

For the record, we share 5 titles in this months shipment--Captain Britain, Buffy, LOEG, Umbrella Academy and the Unwritten.

Seaguy #3 just might redeem it for you, or send you screaming the other way. Either way it's an explosive ending.
