I actually read some of the novels, and I personally liked the ” gee, golly ” narration as you’ve put it. It felt like I could hear Vincent Price’s voice reading the prose from beyond the grave; it didn’t take the story to seriously, and when you’re dealing with such a story as this one, that’s important. I’m interested in checking out the manga, though.

Colby — yes, there is a excerpt of the novel in the back of the manga, and the manga is much, much better. The “gee, golly!” narration really takes away from the creepiness…

While I havn’t read this title, I have fond memories of the original books, which came out while I was in middle/ high school. Really disturbingly creepy, and hopefully this fformat will dispose of some of the overblown narration.

ohhhh…Grant’s review is very, very good. I had a hard time with this one because I wanted to leave as much surprise as possible for the reader (so I hint at things Grant describes quite beautifully).

I loved the friendship angle of the book and trying to figure out why two boys have such different outcomes when exposed to the same (very, very strange) thing. I’m very curious to see what answers we may get in future volumes…

Yours is the second positive review for this title, completely unheard of by me until it showed up at my doorstep. Luckily, Yen Press sent a few duplicates so I’ve still got a copy on hand.
