A Year of Cool Comic Book Moments – Day 164

Here is the latest cool comic book moment in our year-long look at one cool comic book moment a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!

Today begins a tripartite look at the beginnings of the awesome Milestone hero, Static!

Static #1 was written by Dwayne McDuffie and Robert Washington III and was drawn by John Paul Leon (with Steve Mitchell on inks).

Here’s our first introduction to our hero, appropriately enough, we meet Frieda Goren at the same time, as she would definitely go on to play a major role in this series…

Then after a fight, where Static mops the floor with the bad guys, he puts the finishing touch on things…

Our young hero, Virgil Hawkins, tries to perfectly time his trip back home and along the way to his room, he encounters his mother and sister, who give him some grief, but he gets past it and gets to his room just in time for…

“The” moment for me in this intro is probably the full page splash where we first see Static, but I’m also a bit partial to the interactions with Frieda.

Tomorrow’s moment shows things get thrown a bit out of whack…

…Wow, his original costume was pretty ugly. Glad they went with a different couple of looks for the animated series.

“Gigolobos”?! You gotta love comic book slang.

I forgot McDuffie did this. Man, this was good.

You really should attach a date to some of these. The clothes say “Eighties”, but I’m not sure.

June 1993. It’s right on the bottom of the second page.

De-boner? De-bonare?

I don’t know if that’s was a legit typo or a double entendre! (probably both!)

The moment for me is the lovely quietness of the final panel.

Swa-vay and de-boner = suave and debonair. Static’s mangling words like Bugs Bunny, except intentionally.

nice to see with static now being revived to see his old adventures revisted for static and fredia made such a cool couple. and love how virgal is pretending to be shocked when fredia mentions meeting static .
