Captain America: Reborn Incentive Covers Not Much of an Incentive

Think what you will about the relative evil of comic books having variant covers that a comic book retailer has to order X amount of copies of the regular cover to purchase a copy of the variant cover. Whatever you might think about it, it’s become a pretty standard sales tactic by Marvel and DC (plus other companies, but DC and Marvel use it extensively).
Marvel has a few incentive covers for Captain America: Reborn #1, one by John Cassaday and one by Joe Quesada.
But get this – the variant covers ship THREE WEEKS after the regular cover.
That’s not much of an incentive.
“Order X copies to get this special cover, but then wait three weeks until you get it!” is not much help to retailers.

That’s…that’s kind of idiotic, actually.

This isn’t the 1st time this has happened. I went searching for one of the 70th ann. covers (I think the BP #1 that was a Namor cover) and it didn’t ship the same week.

Or do they think buyers are so stupid that thye might see the variant cover, and assume it’s a book they don’t already own?

Well, probably 5 or 6 weeks for the Quesada cover.

Okay so who is taking bets that the majority of REBORN will be pencilled AND inked by Butch Guice???

I wouldn’t say they do it extensively. Most high profile books get them, but the majority of their output has only one cover. IDW does two regular covers and two incentive covers (if not more) for everything they publish.

i know my LCS raises the prices on the variant covers. so if people want to pay the extra money and it helps keep my LCS in business i think it’s a good thing.
