More brilliance! The panel (both art and text) where hitherto silent Guy’s thoughts are revealed (“Kill em all! Kill em all!”) breaks me up every time. And this revelation of the extremity of his reaction turns out to just be a setup for the escalation of it from finding the mascot suit in his bed!

The other speech panel that makes me laugh out loud (because the art and story to that point almost let me HEAR his voice) is “Then I’ll die! I’ll die! I’ll die”

Hilarious. Genius. I don’t think there’s a stand-alone issue of this book that’s funnier. Great choice!

To be fair to Russ Braun, it looks like this was done in a rush. Probably editorial re-writing. It would make sense to see Hughes only doing the last two pages.

Yeah, I should have spotted page 22 better. Like you say the body language is a giveaway.

Hughes’ debut on the JL coincided with my first issue of the League (prodded by a coworker to pick it up).

He’s still my favorite JL artist from that era. I like Maguire a lot too, but his figure work seemed stiffer than Hughes very naturalistic approach. Templeton was good too…

The last two pages are obviously Adam Hughes – they have his flair for great body language. The first three are obviously not. The 4th page really doesn’t give much to go on either way

Enh. The Jokey League was a thing and I admit I enjoyed it at the time but it all went a Joke Too Far, in the end. (I honestly don’t understand what you see in Guy Gardner.) Guy was cool when he got hit by the bus and John Stewart got the ring. Now, THAT story’s a source of a buncha cool moments! By Neal Frickin’ Adams, man! Teach the Children!

And don’t get me started on Kool Kirby moments, you funky little fink! (Goody Rickels and the Pyrogranulate, anyone?)

Great inclusion–one of my favorite single story issues as well, and a highlight of the whole JLI era of things.

Indeed, why can’t there be comics like this again?

The moment is the Guy mascot in Guy’s bed–hands down one of my favorite splash pages ever.

This is also one of my favorite Guy Gardner moments!

Yeah, just horrible art…. why… it tells the story clearly, shows people from different angles and keeps them “on model”, shows nuanced facial expressions, all while being able to visually put the jokes across.

You’re right, absolute shit!

It’s not the best art I’ve ever seen, but c’mon it’s decent, competent comic book work.

BTW: I think page 21 is the only page that really looks completely Adam Hughes to me (of course I could be wrong).

Booster had recently quit the League and founded the Conglomerate.

Awesome issue. Finding the figure in the bed has to be the moment for me.

Note that, despite all the funny stuff, Guy’s interaction with Ice is very sweet and the stuff with Oberon leaving as he once again gets drowned out by the mayhem was rather poignant. The JLI were funny, but never devoid of realism or humanity.

This can’t be Adam Hughes. I’m not a cheesecake fan or anything, but this looks like the kind of shit two 23 year olds with no training would be selling at a mall “comic show” with sad, hopeful looks in their eyes.

My mistake, there were two pencillers on the issue, and Braun was one of them. I’m pretty sure the bottom two pages are Hughes work, it looks like his 80s style.

Regardless, I don’t think any of the pages are as bad as you are making out.

I’m going off of memory here, but wasn’t Braun the inker and Hughes the penciller? The order you list them gives the opposite impression that Braun pencilled and Hughes inked. And yeah, this was a great moment. Good choice there.

Braun drew most of the book and Hughes handled a few pages here and there (basically the beginning and the ending, I believe).
